My dad and I are working on putting a limited slip in our D27 for our Renegade I... the D44 in the rear has that trac lock thingy i believe, oh well... it works for now. Anyways, I don't know what is inside my D27 such as spline count. What information do i need to have before i go to purchase the parts for the L/S? How do I get that info w/o tearing into the differential?

The tags are missing on the cover, and the only thing i can make out from the cast numbers on the outside is the D 27, all of the other numbers are just serial numbers i guess. Also, I am not looking at lockers or posilock, or anything like that. This L/S is new to me, what do i need?

    Trash-lock...

Those little clutch packs on the side there (look like really thin gears or sprockets all stacked on top of each other) is what the trash-lock uses to limit your slip... and it does very little to limit your slip.

Alas, your question is about the D27.

I'm not personally aware of a limited slip for the D27, and I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not much of a fan of limited slip diffs, and tend to believe that a locker or spool is a better setup if you intend to take your rig on the trail.

    Krage carries a Lock-Rite locker for the D27, it's about $300.

If you can find them the power lock for the D27 is a good unit. I installed one in my D27 this year. I have only used it in the sand to date but it seemed to help. Looking forward to trying it in the rocks soon.

As far as the Trac Lock. I had one in my D44 rear. Broke it three times and rebuilt it twice. I now have a Detroit and love it!

    Just my $.02.

dana made a powr-loc posi for the 27.there a little scarce but i think you could find one.they are fairly strong and definently a up grade over open diff. two spiders vs four spiders.i have one in the rear (44)and it works good and is rebuildable. mike s.

Get a Power Lok, I’ve got’em front and rear and love’em. You can find’em on EBay occasionally, or craigslist, you might even check Herm the OD Guy. At least I know he sells parts for’em.
As far as spline count, it’s ten, same as a Dana 25. You’ll need to figure out your gear ratio though, so you know which unit to get.

X2 on what Corveeper and others have said. The only LS available for the 27 is the Powerlock which happens to be one of the best available for any diff. Herm may have one, I know R&P has a good used one on the shelf right now as I tore it apart to survey it. The clutches are like new. They can be reached at 503-557-8911. As mentioned, you will need to know your gear ratio to make sure it will fit. Nickmil

imnsho, a trash-loc diff is hardly worth its salvage metal value. :)

try to find a power-lock. there still out there. a lock-right is throw away because the dana 27 carrier is your weak link, with the power-lock youll be a lot better off. im running one in the front of my 55 m38a1 and a 350 sbc, works great.

If you can't afford the Powerlock at R&P, I have one that is 4.88 / 5.38 ratio. It doesn't need rebuilding. The clutch packs were replaced about 5 years ago and it's seen only moderate trail use. PM me if you are interested. Besides being the only LS for a D27 it is by far the best LS you can buy. I use one in my D30. New it was $560 from West Coast Differentials. You won't likely find a new one for a 27 though. Just my opinion, spools or lockers don't belong in D27s.

Thanks for all of the info on this one... Dad just informed me that he just purchased the Powerlock and that it will be here sometime this week.

I wish he would take more time in shopping for parts like this, I know we can fet parts cheaper than he gets them for... for instance, I bought some windshield latches the other day for $22 on the site and before i could tell him, he placed a bid on ebay for nearly $40. Oh well... he was outbidded in time.
