New member with engine and windshield hinge question.

    I recently purchased a '75 cj-5 with a 304. It had not run in 2 years so I replaced the carb, spark plugs, plug wires, rotor, distributor cap, and put hedman headers on it. I cranked it up and it runs well except for a fast idle--need to check timing and adjust carb. After running it for about 15 min I noticed the header tubes for the the 1 and 3 cylinders are not getting hot. I can grab those 2 tubes and not get burned. The other 6 header tubes are hot, as they should be. Is this blow-by or could those 2 cylinders not be firing? Any ideas? Never had this problem, and I just wondered if the exhaust gas was winding up in the crank case (bad rings?) or in the intake (bad exhaust valves?). Also, does anybody know how to remove the upper windshield hinge? I removed the 3 screws on the bottom and the 2 bolts on the front of the frame and still can't get the hinge to slide out of the frame.

    Sounds like those two cylinders are not firing. Or not firing when there is compression. Check your plug wires and make sure they are not crossed. Also check compression with a guage. There should not be more than 10-15% differance between the lowest and the highest cylinders.

    Regarding the upper windshield hinges, most likely they are rusted in place. PB blaster is your friend. Soak the hinges, soak them again, then soak them some more. They will come out with some difficulty so be patient. I soaked mine through the bolt holes, through the bottom of the ws frame, and any way I could get penetrating oil in there and it took a couple of days. Nickmil

    As said before removing the windshield frame from the hinges can be a real bear. Mine was virtually fused together with thirty four years of rust. I used PB Blaster, heat and a hammer and still had to cut a groove down the the length of the frame where the hinge insert goes to get mine out. Put it all back together and welded up the groove.

    Thanks for the input fellas. I think I am just going to use the cut-off wheel and cut the windshield frame because I had to replace it anyway. On my engine problem, I checked the plug wires and they are correct. Could my timing be far enough out to affect the firing of those 2 cylinders? I really don't feel my rings are bad but check my logic. If had serious enough blow-by on those 2 cylinders to be pushing exhaust gas into the crank case wouldn't I probably be blowing oil out of the dipstick or oil filler or even be blowing oil pan gaskets or rear main seals? I guess a compression check would answer my question but I'm a broke student and just being cheap I guess. After owning 4 Jeeps I still haven't had to confront the engine demons yet. I guess my good look with motors may have run out. Maybe one day I'll learn not to buy Jeeps that don't run but what's the fun in that.

    You might be able borrow a comp. guage from an auto parts store. Auto Zone loans alot of tools at no charge. Do you have a VOM to check the plug wires? An internally broken wire will not fire the spark plug.
