I just "won" an auction on E-Bay for a Spicer 18H rear PTO unit. I already have a Warn Overdrive, and will need to buy the adaptor for this PTO (the adaptor bolts to the rear of the overdrive, and the PTO bolts to the rear of the adaptor). When it is all installed, the shift lever for the PTO will be substantially farther to the rear of the JEEP than most - perhaps about a foot or more to the rear of the stock PTO shifter access hole.

I can't be sure yet, but it seems like this one will almost have to end up very near the riser where the bed/rear seat area begins. Has anyone else encountered this problem? How did you deal with it? The way I see it, there are only two options: 1) cut a new hole near the riser, and bend the lever to go up through it from below, if needed; or 2) cut the lever off at about 1" or so, and install some kind of linkage forward to the stock PTO hole. Anyone ever tried this? Space in there is limited to about 1" between the top of the overdrive, and the bottom of the tub floor where the hole is.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated - thanks! :)

You might look to find a handle from a pickup or wagon that had the PTO. They were typically under the bench seat and should have the bend you need.

Actually it's about 7", I'm going through this on Tonka right now as I repair the front floor. I was going to cut another hole to accommodate the shifter but as luck would have it it puts the shifter right about where the driver's side seat mount foot ends up :(. To replicate the size & spacing of the existing hole you actually need to trim about 1/2" off the reinforcement plate for the seat mount floor nut.

I'll be figuring out a remote shifter but that's easier to do with my Rhino PTO than it would with a 18H. I'd love to see some pics of how others have done it

Howard, did you ever custom make shift linkage? If so I'd like to see pictures.

Not yet, All Things Jeep got put on hold for a while due to house renovations. Also I picked up a dual-stick unit, not sure how that's going to affect things either.

Linkage is an interesting word to me when it comes to the PTO shifter.
Mine shifters come right out of the PTO unit and top of the PTO unit is right a the floor level so it would be hard to connect linkage while staying under the floor.

My transmission is longer then the original and the shifters come through the floor about 5" to the rear of the factory hole. That places the shifters right behind the seat support tube. Even if the overdrive was 8" long the PTO shifter(s) would still be between the seats assuming stock transfer case placement.

I'd say try it. I'll bet it will just work.

If not I have a friend that has PTO that controls via cable. I think its off of a Forward Control. Bet he'd part with it.

I'm going to run this setup as well, but with a 60/40 split bench so I'll be making a remote setup I think.

Yeah, the FC's used a short shifter with an "eyelet" that you could hook up a shifter cable or linkage to for remote operation. It would be very easy to build one without cutting the original stick. I've made them in the past.

Back when I started this thread I thought I wanted to do the linkage thing too. But without a body lift, my PTO shift tower was just going to be too high. So, I ended up cutting the hole for it instead. I hope you manage to work it out ... would like to see how you end up doing it.
