I have read a few notes on folks flushing their motors using ATF. My 79 CJ5 w/258 has a little ping on the top-end and I was told flushing the motor might fix this.

Is there a certain way to do this? Any Help would be great!

    Thanks!

ping on the top-end? could it be pre-detanation wich would happen under load and would be from carbon in the cyl. or timming to far advanced.
or is it valve train noise?

Bought my 74 with 258 engine froze. A couple rounds of seafoam in the oil, fuel and direct in cylinders and shes clean as a whistle. Follow up with Mobile One full syn. - the one with the gold cap as your oil and all noises will be gone. Runs like a new engine.

Whatever you flush the engine with (ATF,Seafoam) do it outside. It will smoke like a chimney for a few minutes.

am I missing something? The way I always heard (and practiced) the ATF flush was to add a QT to the crankcase about 50 miles before an oil change. the high detergent combined with low viscosity is known for cleaning out sticky lifters and eliminating rattle (and opening up leaks in weak gaskets). then change your oil regularly. $.02

Not to confuse you more, but.....
90% of a quart in crank and 10% through the carb or into cylinders. Old timmers trick that I have seen work several times. Slowly add through carb or as I did squirting directly into cylinders through spark plugs. The crankcase addition of ATF will thin the oil and the detergent will clean anything the oil touches.
Like $sink said, change oil shortly there after. Flush w/ cheap oil and then fill with good oil. Search Google for info and here too.

Also check link below. Most ideas are for froze engines but will work for dirty ones.
