sorry for this off question but it was on my mind. is it possible to adapt a ax5 to a dana 18 transfer case? i didnt see anything on novak. I remember somthing in JP magazine but i think it was the ax15 that they mated to a dana18.

    i was toying with the idea of a 2.5l wrangler motor with a ax5 in a ecj5.

Why not just use the 231 and get a D30 with drivers side pumpkin??
The 231 has a better low gear stock than the D18.

if i did that wouldint i also need a centered diff d44, and i think all of the driver side drop dana 30's are wide track, like around 60'' wms to wms so that would involve cutting down axles. i thought about that that and it just seamed cooler and easier to have the d18

Why use an ax5? it's not that strong of a transmission, why not use a SM465 or SM420?

Herm's got a couple of trannys that have been adapted to work with the Dana 18 ready to bolt in. I'm running the same Ford toploader he's got....works great...

Already mated to the 2.5L, works well there, if you got it and not a SM420 it's cheap. ;)

Mine never gave me any issues.

JP's project mated a NV3550 to the D18 in a CJ6. I'm sure that an adapter can be made, but what about length? Will you suffer from ugly driveline angles?

i wouldint have to worry about driveline angles, the jeep is using factory springs. its just going to have a real freakin short drive shaft

DON'T spend any money adapting in an AX-5. They just don't hold up very well and are VERY expensive to rebuild. The basic rebuild kit isn't bad but the hard parts are very expensive and I haven't rebuilt one yet that hasn't needed at least one gear and synchronizer assembly replaced. Better to step up to a Ford Toploader, AX-15, NV-3550, etc. Something with some strength to begin with. Just my opinion. Nickmil
