    Hey all,

FINALLY got back to the CJ5 swap. All finished (other than minor bugs) but notice that the jeep has considerably less power. Any others experience this?

Engine has been unaltered and purrs. The exhaust changed slightly but nothing dramatic. I have a 1300+/- rpm stall convertor which seems just right.

Did I just kill the dauntless by taking away its heavy flywheel??
    Any ideas??
    Thanks again,
    Ty

Your description almost had me believing that you had a TH400 in it which eats alot of energy. Whats the history on the TH350? Maybe its tired. dunno. Is the front dampener on the 225 compatible with an auto trans?

Food for thought, just guesses here -- others will chime in

    Hey Jon,
TH350 is fresh with a transgo kit. I'm thinking that the good "snap" I used to feel must have been from that flywheel.

    Hopefully others will speek up.

My Dad has a TH350 behind his :v6:. Works great. With that said, his :v6: Offy intake and Holley 390 TH350 and 4.27 gears is a *bit* slower than my :v6: standard tranny 3.73's

sounds normal then. yeah, the manual flywheels has alot of "grunt" effect in a direct power tranfer to the wheels. The auto trans and convertor full of fluid has a TON more mass to spin and takes HP to run it. Thats why TH400's were notorious of sapping energy. Beefy sucker!

An auto trans is a full time "slip" device. Thats why there are Torque Convertor Clutches in modern trannys. It creates more of a manual trans "direct drive" for fuel economy (less slip)

Yep it all makes since. Thanks Patrick and Jon

My .030 over, cammed, 4barrelled, headered, v6 is kinda lame now----I'll give a valiant chance but I think the search for a 4.3 has begun.

    Hi Ty,
Glad to see you're back! Need to get over there and see how things are coming. Anyway, just wanted to mention that you will need to re-case the TH 350 to fit a 4.3 as the bellhousing patterns are different. Nickmil

My best friend Blue76cj5 has a TH350 behind a 225 in his jeep an 82 CJ7 and besides for the horrible stock gearing it gets up and goes pretty dang good and its all stock besides for the fuel injection.
The TH350 has a B&M shift kit in it thats it.

Just a thought, have you checked the timing Ty??? Timing can be retarded just enough to still run fairly smoothly, but lack power. Also, have you put a vacuum gauge on the intake yet? Low but steady vacuum could indicate an exhaust blockage/restriction with the new setup. The wrong muffler can do this...

I would place money on the problem being the auto trans..... a manuel will ALWAYS feel "faster" than an auto. Trust me I have messed with custom vehicles for many years and a properly built manuel always beats an auto on the seat of the pants dyno.

    Thanks,
I'll check the vacuum. The timing was dead nuts. It's the same HEI setup I used (unaltered) with the manual. But, I will check it again aswell.

    Steve,
The exhaust changed dramatically as far as routing, and I did swap out the standard 2 1/2" flowmasters to 2 1/2" huff muffler flowmasters. That'd be crazy if they rob that much power. I say "that much", but its not like its a dog, just no snap. Missing the kind of power that gets you up steep hills with no run.

I think I'll really like the auto for 4xing but don't have the same hp/torque to jeep ratio I had with the manual. The 4.3 would probably get me back there...thoughts??

Sparky why the head shake on the 4.3?? The only thing left on my jeep thats kaiser is the frame, engine, t-case w/ o.d., and the rear axle.
