    Greetings,

I've got a set of steel wheels being sandblasted to remove multiple coats of paint. I was wondering what the opinion is on using Rustoleum to paint these wheels. I do not have access to a spray booth and I would like to keep this simple. I'm thinking of using the red rusty metal primer as a basecoat and Gloss Black and Silver as a topcoat. This will be a brush paintjob. Anyone have any experiences or thoughts to share on painting steel wheels ?

    Thanks,

    Extreem

I bead blasted mine, sprayed rustoleum rusty metal primer on them. Topcoat I sprayed semi gloss black on them. They have held up very well. Two of them were chrome and two were painted steel. I have brushed a lot of rustoleum on my frame. Can't speak for the results yet as I haven't driven it. It looks good tho....

I painted my trailer wheels with Rustoleum white. They've held up well for 5 years now - and the trailer sits outside.

I've been using the brush on Rustoleum red primer on my trailers for years. It holds up well and makes a good base for the color coat. Make sure it has fully dried before applying the color coat.

I shot my wheels (bead blasted first) with rustoleum primer and appliance epoxy black, been 2 years in the weather and still have a good gloss.

Sounds like a good plan to me.. only why dont you get some spray cans instead of brushing the paint on? The finish will be nicer without the brush strokes...
I used flat black tremclad on my wheels and they are holding up great FWIW

    I am a professional Painter.
And I would recomend a etching primer that hold well to bare metal. Xim is really good I would just spray can this on doesnt need to be to much.

Think of it as glue between the metal and paint.
That said sounds like rustoleum is working ok.

I sprayed Rustolium flat white on my steel wheels, and it has held up very well for the last year - outside. It was their "professional/commercial" type, but came in a rattle can.

I did a brush job with black Rustolium on the frame - it too is holdng up well. I'd second the opinion about using spray instead of a brush for the wheels - it is bound to look better.

I brushed the paint on the trailer wheels because I was too lazy to get the tires removed... FWIW it came out nice enough - the wheels are a bit pitted anyway.

Reminds me - on Dutch I had brought in nice newly painted wheels to get the tires put on, and got them back all scratched up anyway...

Yes, especially if you spray it and use hardener. btw that's what I used on the wheels on my Jeep in my avitar. Bought a quart of paint at Lowes and hardener at TSC because I just had to paint them on that Sunday and it could not wait until monday to get automotive paint mixed up:rofl: . works though.

BTW, I didn't remove the tires from the rims either. Lazy man's solution: cut a donut shaped piece of plastic out of a painter's tarp, and use masking tape to secure it to each tire before spraying on the paint. It left *almost* no overspray. What did get on the rubber was removable. The very last part of the edges on the rims didn't quite get a good coat though - luckily they were almost the same color originally as the paint I used.

X2 on the etching primer, doubles the time before rust comes back, especially when used in the salt.
