I have a 62cj5 with a ford 302 and a 3 speed trans. I am not sure what the trans is. The transfer case is a twin stick. When I bought the jeep I was told the transfer case was T18. I am not sure if that is correct. I am wanting to get rid of the 3 speed manual trans and put in a C6 auto. I am wondering if there are adapter's for the transfer case to the trans that I can get and where to get them. I don't think the transfer case will bolt directly to the auto trans. I am not sure If this is even possible. I want to keep my twin stick transfer case if at all possible. I am going to sell the warn overdrive that I have in it now to fund part of the conversion.
Also if anyone can point me to some sites that will help with the conversion that would be great. I can do the work myself but it would be helpfull to see how others have done this type of thing.
    Any help would be great

    Welcome from KS!

First, the transfer case is a D18, as in Dana 18, a T18 is a four speed transmission. Common mistake.

Second, I'd check with Novak about what you want to do. If anyone has the adapters they will.

Hello! I'm not as knoledgable as some of the other guys on the site like Timgr that really know the subject of jeeps, but I was of the opinion that the main reason for creating the CJ7 was to be able to fit an automatic transmission. Your cj5 may be too short and you may run into some serious modifications to do the job.

Your transmission is most likely a T-15 given the year, and is considered to be one of the stronger 3 speeds put into a jeep.

Check out http://www.novak-adapt.com/index.htm for some great info on what you can and cannot convert in a cj.

    Also see www.jeeptech.com as well.

    I hope this helps!

As an aside, the CJ-7 was created as the replacement for the Commando (which had an automatic available). ;)

    '62 has a T-15?
It should have a T-90 in it. A fairly strong 3 speed in its own right.

I am not sure if it was the stock trany or not. I will have to get under it tonight and take a look at it.

Highly unlikely a three speed hooked to a D18 is anything else, but it could be.

I cant remember if any EB had pass side drops, I know the later ones were driver....If so you could steal a C4 tranny and D20 out of one swap, your 18 gears into the 20 case I believe and still have your twin sticks.

There's a recent thread on the Intermediate forum about the C4 swap http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36874 - I'd guess a C6 would be too long, especially in a 81" WB Jeep. That's the main problem with automatics - the CJ-5 wheelbase is too short in most cases. No adapter from Novak, but Advance Adapters will have it.

Thanks for everyones advise on this but the conversion has been dropped. The adapters are there for both c6 and c4 but the cost is to high for how offen and what I use the jeep for. I am going to rebuild the 302 and stick with the 3 speed. Thanks again for the input.
