Ok To Make A Long Story Short I Wanted A Lift For My 3b. Went To A Local 4x4 Shop And They Sold Me A Kit For An Early 5 And Said It Would Fit And Not Knowing Better I Believed It. Well It Didnt Fit So They Said They Could Put It On By Moving My Hangers. All This Was 5 Years Ago And I Finally Got Some Tires Last Week And The Rear Axle Is Too Close To The Front Of The Wheel Well. A Jeep Buddy Of Mine Has Helped Me To Move The Hangers Back As Far As We Can To Try And Fix The Mess They Made Out Of My Jeep But We Cant Get Enough Of It Back For The Jeep To Look Right. Also No Matter What We Do One Side The Driver Side Is Always A Little Bit More Forward Than The Pass Side. We Have Very Carefully Measured And All Spring Hangers Are In The Same Location. I Had None Of These Probs Before They Did This Hack Job On My Jeep. The Buddy Of Mine Restores Jeeps For A Living So He Is Knowlegeable But He Is Even Stumped. I Know Buying The Right Springs And Starting Over Would Be The Best But I Dont Have The Cash So Ive Got To Try And Use What Ive Got Its Only Got 4000 Miles On The Springs. Thanks So Much For Any Help Or Advice You Could Give As This Is Driving Me Nuts.

Are the springs mounted the same direction? Most springs are not the same distance from pin to end from one end to the other, in other words one end of the spring may be longer. You need to measure them and make sure they are installed the same way.

I Dont Want To Start Welding Extensions Or Anything Back There.

The problem is the early CJ springs are longer in the rear than the flat fender springs. You have two choices to make them work and have the axle in the proper location. 1) lengthen the rear of the frame so you can put the rear shackle mount in the proper location 2) get different rear springs.
The CJ-5 frame and body is longer in the rear than the 3b and that allows for the longer rear spring. Nickmil

What About Removing Each Spring And Drilling A New Hole For The Center Pin? Im Trying To Save Up For New Springs But I Will Also Have To Move The Mounts Yet Again And Find And Put Them Back In Stock Locations. Im Just Trying To Get By Until I Can Get The Money Together To Buy New Springs.

I wouldn't even TRY to drill a spring pack. The tempering process that makes a hunk of steel a spring also makes it darned hard, and the drilling process will induce heat that would likely affect the spring rate. Notto mention the fact that you are going to need some serious drill bits (cobalt, etc.) in order to do so.

IMHO, wait until you have the $$ to do it right and do it once.

Best Price? Try Bob Supplee... 405-799-8977
Just a suggestion, don't go with "cheapest"... you get whatcha pay for. Go with BDS or Skyjacker.

For what its worth, you want the tire to be a little forward and not really centered in the body opening. As, the spring flexes out on the upward motion the tire will move backwards as the spring flattens out. So, you may want to see how much your tire moves backwards as you compress the spring all the way before you make changes.

Have you tried flipping the front and rear ends of the springs? My rear (and front) don't have centered pins.

Try BDS, if you break um they replace em. I like that they don't sag.

How much distance are you talking about from being centered? An inch? More? What about using an offset centering pin plate? It is essentially like a 1/4" thick shim, but with zero angle. There is a hole in it that goes over your existing pin and it has a new pin on top of the plate that is offset (1/2" or 1") over from the hole. It in effect lowers your suspension 1/4", but moves your axle backward (or forward). They cost about $20 a set I think.

Ask around on this board. Sometimes you can find someone who has a set of springs that you need sitting in a "parts pile". You might not have the lift you want, but it would be a cheeper fix until you can buy what you need. Might even be able to work a trade if someone has them. Post up in the parts section and see.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's bugged by that. That's a lot of work to put a capital letter on every word!
