    Hey guys/gals!
This carrier was sitting on the front seat of my 55 CJ5 when I towed it home. Looks like a Dana 44...some sort of posi. The ring gear has a big bite taken out of it, so I don't care about it but it looks like the carrier might be worth using. Can you still get parts for these things?

    Ring gear reads: 9 1 67 DANA 18450 43D29 47-11

Carrier has: 44 STD C30761 (looks like that anyway).

Is this worth saving for future use? Don't know if I'll be rebuilding my rear axle, but would it be worth installing this?

    it's called a powerloc
    it's D44 4.10 and lower 4.27, 4.88 5.38 etc
or a 4 series as some folks call it
    yes, it is desireable
yes, parts are still available as well
the ratio of the busted ring gear was 4.27
do you know what ratio you run now ?
as long as it's not 3.73 (this carrier will not work for 3.73 ratio)
disassembly of the unit and inspection will determine its worth
ebayable for between $100-$200 depending on who wants it the worst

Thanks for the info! Gears (as far as I know) should be stock 5.38s. Of course, the thing has no drivetrain and I've never driven it so I don't know. I've had it forever (stored at a friends house), but I just got it home  . I just posted pics in the OT section...
I'll probably just put it on a shelf for later...got a lot of other bits to worry about before the rear axle :) . Any idea who carries parts for them? Thanks again for the info.

    yep, there's a lot of things I don't know

    toolbox
take a look where the axles slide inside
count the splines (if you can)
most likley 19, but could be 30 as well

Probably 19, Trac-locs were in the 30 spline diffs (I think). TIMGR will know for sure if he jumps in.:v6:

Yup, like Jim said, it's a Powerlock. Good units, stronger than open diff, way stronger than Trac-lock, fully rebuildable, and by changing the clutch stacking you can make them more or less aggressive. Some rare ones were 10 spline, VERY rare. Most were 19 or 30 spline. 19 spline are more common but there were a lot used with 30 spline axles, although many of those were 3 series (3.73-2.54 gears). This is one case where the side gears will interchange. Meaning you can put 30 spline side gears in a 19 spline case and vice/verse. Can't do that with an open case. The 10 and 19 spline units use a different carrier bearing than the 27/30 spline units. Nickmil
