I have a two piece dana 44...not sure what year...the po put the drums on behind the axle flange and put the lug studs throught them. I know this wasnt right. So i went out and found 11" drums off a wagoneer with a two piece dana 44. Tried putting them on and they didnt fit right. There is about a 1" gap between them and the backing plate. So i guess my ? is could the backing plates be off a chevy or something? Or do i need drums specifiacally for a cj5? This is driving me nuts. I know for sure they are 11" brakes. Thanks

What kind of adjusters do the backing plates have, and what's the width of the shoes?

If they are the cam type adjusters they are probably Willys wagon/truck brakes, and the hub does go on the outside of the drum.

In the top picture above the clip that holds the shoe on is a little offset/cam thingy. On the backside you'll see a long threaded nut, sticking out from that should be a flat part of the stud you can get a wrench on. Probably 1/4 " wrench. If it's not frozen you can get a wrench on the nut part and one on the flat part and lossen the nut in order to turn the stud. Play with it and you'll see the cam adjust the brake shoe in and out as you turn it. Each side is adjusted individually. A bit of a pain but if you're careful you can adjust them so they work good.

What the other's said, off Wagons and Pu's. Those are "Lockheed" brakes. R&P used to have stacks of that stuff. Might give 'em a call at 503-557-8911 if you can't find any locally. Nickmil
