A quick search based on those numbers says its a Saginaw 4 speed.

Sounds similar to mine, I have a T-14. What side of the tranny is the drain plug located? In the Tech section, under 3 speed tranny, 1971 the T-14 was used with the V6. I agree with other's post a picture.

Either a Saginaw car 4-speed or a Muncie. If the case is cast iron, it's a Saginaw. A Muncie would be aluminum-cased IIRC.

Yup, it's a Saginaw. The Muncie has the reverse shift link on the tailhousing, not the side cover.

Mine stood up to plenty of abuse behind a 409 Chevy in a full-sized Impala, so yes it should hold up. It's not the optimum gear-wise for off-roading, with anywhere between a 2.84 to a 3.50 first gear.

I'd get it running first though, and see how it does before yanking it..

The transmission will hold up to a lot of power, what will hurt it most would be large tires (35" or bigger) and the load they impart on the small gears when bouncing around or lugging with the transmission banging back and forth.

It's definitely a Saginaw car 4 speed. All shift levers in the cover and all cast iron case. As noted reverse on Muncie's and BW T-10's are in the tail housing. I run the widest ratio Saginaw and have since I put the Buick V-6 in (about 18 years). It's a decent tranny as long as you stay 33" tires or below ( I run 33's). Like McRuff said, much more than that and they can't handle the shock load very well. I used to race mine and never broke it, but I do have a spare and I would swap out as soon as the bearings started making noise. I did crack the 3-4 synchro hub twice speed shifting into 3rd, but as long as you are reasonable with it it should be fine. There are many versions of the Saginaw and if you ever need parts make sure you have the part # from the bearing or tooth count of the gear you need as well as the #'s from the case. Nickmil
