I have an ididit steering column. I just told them that I have a 1983 CJ-5 and they gave me a column. Now, I do NOT have my stock Jeep steering wheel :( and I was wondering what kinds of steering wheels will fit? Anyone know? Can I just go to AutoZone and pick up a generic steering wheel and it will fit? I know, I know, it's NOT that easy, but I am curious.

I want a stock Jeep steering wheel but I am afraid every time I bid on one on eBay it ends up going for over $140!!! An AutoZone $40 one starts to sound a little better until I can afford an OEM one.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yep, that's what it is. It fits great, wires match up perfectly, it even has stainless knobs for turn signal, tilt and hazzards. Damn thing probably cost more than my Jeep! Thing is, I didn't pay for it, my dad has a chrome plating business here in Toledo (I see all of your ears perking up!) and he used to have the ididit account, so they just gave me one for free.

**side note: ididit and Flaming River both make these columns***

So, like I said, everything works great on it, just have NO IDEA what steering wheel to get!

I guess I could contact ididit and find out some info on it, maybe see if they make an adapter plate to fit certain steering wheels......

That would be too easy tho!

I believe what you want is an adaptor to a "standard 3 bolt" wheel". You'll have to check with ididit to see if that shaft is a generic size or specific to them. If it's specific, you'll need to get the adaptor from them.

<wondering out loud> surely they kept threas and shaft sizes same as a Saginaw column for simplycity sake. If they did pretty much anything GM or AMC(Jeep) or adapter for such should slide on.<wondering out loud off>

That new column looks great do you know the part number of your column or how long it is? Does it use the stock steering shafts?

Pretty sure a stock later model jeep wheel will fit. I didn't realilze they went that high on ebay, never paid any attention to it. I use a grant on mine, just get an adaptor for the GM or ididit. It is probably listed in the adapter chart.

Here is what my grant looks like. [IMG]

NICE column! I like the bracket you have on your dash under the column!

**To answer another question: ididit just gave me the column, I used my own OEM shaft. I just told them what I had (my case 1983 CJ-5) and they gave me the correct column. Dad and I put it in and everything went smooth and matched up fine (I was worried about the stock upper coupling matching up, but it did!).**

Two things I'd be concerned with when picking a steering wheel for an early Jeep:

    1. The smaller the wheel, the harder it is to turn, especially with big tires, and on the rocks. There's a reason that big "school-bus" wheel was installed from the factory!
    2. This one's a personal preference, those stamped metal spokes are really hard on the fingers when off-roading. Even the most cautious drive who keeps his hands outside the rim when wheeling will get bitten occasionally when a rock or log spins the wheel unexpectedly. Rounded spokes hurt, but metal spokes will draw blood!

    BTW- Nice column!

I agree on both your points! Last thing I want to do is use up all my band-aids in my First Aid Kit!!!

    1. I have power steering and need a smaller wheel due to space even tho it's a tilt column. I have decided I like the big ol steering wheels, they look kinda' kool now that I've seen pics of people's rigs on here with them!
    2. I'm gonna' just use rollbar padding and pad my whole steering wheel! R) Okay, so I don't hit the rocks with my Jeep (in Toledo???) but I DO trail ride...damn logs.....

    Thanx for the advice!

Very good points on steering wheel selection. I learned to drive on a manual steering tractor in a plowed field.... hehe.... one of the first things you learn is "THUMBS OUT" cause if you hit a rock and that wheel spins it will darn sure take the thumb with it.

I did tilt column, wiring, seats, roll cage, and power steering all at the same time to keep it easy to drive. That smaller wheel I have without the power steering takes a man to turn it.
