Your welder friend can probably make something better and sturdier out of some steel channel or even rectangular tubing. Maybe even a piece of a sign post. That hat channel had a piece of oak in it, which of course absorbed moisture and promoted rust/rot.

    Fine.
It's your Jeep, just do what you want.
Don't come crying to me when you rip that thing off an a rock or a tree.
Just being your mothers advocate here.
    HTH.

Just a heads up on reproduction parts in general most of them are not the same as the original parts.
Tailgates, speedometer cable’s, and the spare tire carriers are no exception to the rule.
Most of the ones that I have seen the mounting holes are a good 1/8” off and will not line up with the original body mounting holes. :(

    Should be 1/2"X20 TPI.
You're not trying to use a left handed nut, are ya?

my welder lady friend fixed that lug up for me. (what a sweetheart!)
and we put as big a chunk of 1"x3" rectangular stock in the fender as would fit.
    it seems pretty darn solid.
eventually i will put that wood block vibe dampener on there also.
