    Greetings,

I just purchased a reproduction spare tire carrier for my 59 cj5 to mount on my right rear quarter panel area. The carrier mounts to the body via 4 bolts.

Can anyone tell me the correct mounting orientation of the carrier?

The carrier has 3 studs to fasten the spare wheel to. I assume it mounts with 2 studs on the bottom and and the remaining stud on top? The top stud has a hole for a pin or cotter key. On the back side of the carrier there is a large beveled hole I assume for a jack or tool of some sort?

You know what happens when you assume anything so I thought I better ask the experts before mounting it!

    Thanks for any help,

    Pete

I've wondered the same thing, what is the correct orientation of that bracket? I'd like to hear the answer too. I don't think that beveled hole is for any particular purpose.

Thanks Rocky. Glad I didn't mount first without asking.

Two bolts at the top, single bolt at the bottom?

That's how my pickup was set up. Not at an angle like Rocky's but yes, two bolts on top, one on bottom.

Was that reflector in the center hole standard? Or something someone added? I never noticed it before that pic.

I'm not sure when that reflector was added, but it's there on a lot of years. Hick'n'tick gave me his old one, (off his '71?), and it did have a reflector, but I'm going to use it without one. I think most of the aftermarket brackets have them too.

The one on mine was a reflector, not a light. Must be older than '70, I guess.

I wondered where that photo came from, I just found it on the net one day and saved it...thought it was cool!

That photo's from before PC's, let alone Photochop. As a former student of photography, it's all in the composition baby, all in the composition. Sure, it could have really been taken on some Trail From Hell, but it might also have been taken next to a parking lot with a scenic view. No telling what's just outside the frame of that photo, could be a trackhoe there that just made that ledge, and a crane that put the truck there, ya never know. Like "wildlife photos" that are really shot at a zoo with telephoto lenses.

    Still a cool photo though!R)

Not sure what you're wanting Bill, but here's some photos of mine. The holes for my spare mount were bondo'd over, so I have to fix that. I plan to beef up the area on the back side somehow by adding some sheetmetal, if I can.

Classic enterprises carry repros of the hat channel & brace, $$$ but well worth the money, that quarter panel takes a real beating from a tire hanging off the side of it.

Especially if there are a lot of bicyclists in your neighbourhood.

    Yup.
Mounting the spare there was a bad idea from the beginning IMO.
