Looking for information on Mail Jeep rear axles.
I have heard that all of them came with limited slip differentials in the rear. Have seen a few of these in the wrecking yards, and was just wondering if it would be worth it to get one for parts. Any idea what gear ratios were available, and what axle splines.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Most were 30 spline Dana 44's that had a centered rear diff. They are narrower than a CJ rear axle and usually had tall gears, like 3.54, 3.07. 3.31, etc. so if you are running lower than 3.73 gears then they won't be any good to you. Most of the limited slips these came with were Trac-locs which isn't all that strong. A while back I sorted through a pile of them and about 1 out of 5 or 6 were usable. The rest were junk. Cracked, case worn out, etc. The postal 44 is a good diff but again, narrower than a CJ unit so may not be the best candidate. Nickmil

I've been using postal 44s for years and love them for flatfenders. I haven't ever seen one that wasn't 3.73, and have had good luck finding them pretty cheap. Need to use a 20 t-case with em.

Do you have the width measurement on one? I could have sworn they were the same width as an early CJ. I knew a few guys who swapped them, but that was back in the early '90s.

As far as the rest goes, I agree- poor gearing and hard use. Not all of them had LSDs, either. (We used to have 10 of them at a time at the local JYs)
