:flag: i recently purchased a 61 cj5, i also own a 48 2a and a 51 3a, the brakes on my 61 are giving me problems and i dont know what to do, the rear right wheel grabs harder and before the other three, i have bleed the brakes several times and i also pulled the drums off and all pads and cylinders seem to be moving uniformly the same amount at the same time, i also switched drums and the right rear still grabs way way way harder then the other three. i though these were self adjusting brakes? please if you have any ideas let me know
    thank you for your time

  2. I don't believe the 61's are self adjusting. I think you probably do need to adjust the right rear.

Could the brake line diameter to the RR be different than the others? Could ther be some restriction at the rear brake line T, on the left side??

Thanks For Trying To Help, The Rear Lines Are New But I Will Try To Adjust They Brake Itself, But From Looking At All 4 When The Drums Were Off They All Moved The Same Amount Evenly
    Thanks Again? :)
    Anybody Else Have An Idea:?

  5. It's not the amount of movement that you are worried about, it's the position of the shoes in relationship to the drums. You need to adjust the brake eccentrics to move the shoes in and away from the drum on the right rear. See Fig 257 and Section P-6 of the FSM or look for these on the lower hemisphere of the backing plate.

With the jeep up on jackstands (wheels blocked for safety).

    1. Remove the rear wheels.
    2. Look for the eccentrics on the backing plates.
    3. Since your happy with the braking on the left rear, rotate the left drum to get a feel for the appropriate amount of drag.
    4. Check the feel on the right hand drum.
    5. To adjust, use a a small wrench or vise-grip to hold the shaft, then loosen the nut, move the shaft to adjust the eccentric and then tighten after you have the appropriate amount of drag when you rotate the drum. The manual references appropriate clearances, but I have done the adjustment by feel.

    Hope this helps.

dohc281 It is what it is.

'61's have 9" brakes that aren't self adjusting. You should adjust them all and most likely your problems will be gone as long as none of the other wheels have leaking brake cylinders.

Worked Agian Tonight On Brakes And They Have 11 Inch Drums. I Adjusted All Four Wheel Cylinders Just Enough That The Drum Could Clear The Pad And Go On But The Problem Is The Same The Right Rear Is Almost The Only One To Grab The Others Are Working But The Right Rear Is Just So Bad, Drums Look Good, I Orderd New Seals And Springs For The Cylinders Maybe That Will Help

Could the shoes on the RR be in the wrong position? Or could it be that the other three sets are in the wrong position? Isn't there a front and a back shoe on each wheel?

sounds like the other 3 need adjusted. might also have the wrong size wheel cylinder on the back.

when you say that the brake lines are new, is that the metal lines and the rubber hoses (if you have any)?

Each brake has a small shoe and a large shoe. Are these in the same position on each wheel? They need to be all the same, relatively.
What position is the small shoe? Is the lining facing front or facing back?

BTW, it's good to have all 11" drums, they're far superior to the factory 9 inchers. Just gotta get this grabbing problem figured out... :)

If you loosen the bleeder screw AND push the brake pedal, do you get fluid from each wheel?

If yes, do the following: run a small hose (1/8") from each wheel into a clear container with brake fluid in it (you need enough fluid to cover the bottom of the hose) and have a helper push the brake pedal once.

If you get any air bubbles, add fluid to the mc and keep pumping the pedal SLOWLY untill fluid comes out (going to get some air from the bled screws. this is normal)

let us know what you find.
