Rear Disc For D44

I have been working on my d44 Rear right side off set. Put a eaton elocker in and have the full floater kit ready to install. Decided to up grade the rear brakes at he same time. Talked to TSM and they told me there kit will not work witk the fullfloater kit. They also menchioned that Warn was haveing a problem with the bracket they sell not working on the full floater kit. Does any one have any experience with this type of install. Don't really want to go Back to the drum brakes if I can help it.

 

didn't Moses Ludel put a floater an disc brakes on a 44 in the Rebuilder's guide? That might show a way.

 

If the full float rearend is using front spindles of some sort then you could look into using front disk brake brackets. That will all depend on what spindle/rotor/calipers you have though. I used standard chevy disk brake brackets and calipers. They bolted right on my chevy spindles and work well with the ford rotors and hubs.

What are you useing for a E brake

 

I recently upgraded my D44 with Warn's FF kit along with disc brakes. Bought it all from R&P 4WD. You could give them a shout or see if the all knowing Nickmil (at least from my dealings with him) jumps in on this thread. Best of luck.

Thats the one thing I hate about my setup. Would really like to get a mechanical brake of some sort. Had been thinking of using a t-case mounted brake, but I'd prefer something at the wheels. I may look into using those eldorado calipers at some point or maybe look into using some of those willwood spot calipers.

I don't really understand why the caliper brackets aren't working for the disc brake kits. Do they just not mount in the right location or what?

I found out that the lage center hole is not made large enough for the warn spindels and have to be redesigned. I am working with them to see how long it is going to take for the rework.:toetap:

 

I used the warn caliper brackets and the calipers specified with the full floater install info. Works great. What changed? AM

 

I guess I should buy the Warn Brackets.

 

On the CJ-6 I used the Warn FF kit with the Warn brackets. I used thin ('79 up CJ rotors) and Camaro/Firebird rear calipers with the parking brake built in. Work great. You can also use Cadillac ElDorado rear calipers, which I'd recommend as they have larger pistons and the e-brake holds a little better. If you don't care about the e-brake you can still use the thin rotors and Chev S-10 front calipers which are much cheaper. Done this install lots of times with no problems. Never heard Warn was having an issue with the brackets. Been installing these kits since they came out. Can you elaborate on what you've heard? Nickmil.

 

Nickmil, can you elaborate on what e-brake cables you use with those conversions? Are you using the standard cj e-brake cables rerouted or something else/custom. Do those calipers bolt in place of standard chevy 1/2ton calipers or are they different mounts. Looking to get a working e-brake.

It was just a comment about the warn bracket but he had nothing specific that he new about. You know how bad rumors get started.
Will keep you up dated with my progress.

 

I used standard Jeep e-brake cables but had to build spacers for them between the cable housing and the caliper cable bracket. they are about 3" or so long. This is to simulate the distance between the e-brake arm and the hole in the backing plate on a drum brake set up. The rest of my cabling is all custom due to length of the chassis and routing differences due to my drive train. Basically, I was starting from scratch so built it the way I wanted it. I've heard rumors that you can use the Eldorado calipers with the thick rotors but have never tried it myself. I know the Firebird/Camaro ones won't work as they won't open up enough to allow the thick rotor to fit. I don't believe the Cadillac calipers will work with the 1/2 ton caliper brackets as I believe the distance between the mounting bolts is too small. I'd have to try it though to find out for sure. I'll try and remember to check this out next time I'm at my buddy's place as he has some cad calipers and the 1/2 ton brackets laying around. Nickmil
