OK, I've got two old heaters I want to restore, the old Wards art deco and the round Willys heater I got from Clay. But, I need to replace the motors on them. Does anybody know of a source for 12v (or 6v) electric motors? God only know who made these, I'm sure there's dozens of styles, if not hundreds. Someone out there carries lots of different small electric motors...anybody know who? I'm afraid that finding replacements is gonna be a bee-yotch. Or rebuilders...know any small electric motor rebuilders?

Geeez Ron , it only belongs in here if you're restoring your jeep heater BACK to 6 volts  .

Anyhoo, until such time as the mods thrash you soundly I'll compound the heresy by mentioning that this very subject was recently thrashed out over on the WT list. Long/Short seems that you just walk your old motor into NAPA & they can match it up to a 12V replacement.

Keep Cool- er, um "Warm" R)

Shhh, not so loud Howard, I don't need ANOTHER thrashing! I figger I'm going with 12v because, well, everydamnthing in the automotive world is 12v, so....might want tunes someday, who knows.

NAPA, huh? I shall give them a try, there's one not far away. I've got the two motors out of the Willys heater tore apart, and I might be able to save 'em with a good cleaning and greasing. But I can't tell if they're 6v or 12v, and if NAPA can match 'em with some more powerful 12v's, I might just have to get me some.

I'm not expecting to stay warm and toasty with this old heater, I'd buy a Mojave unit if I was really after good heat. I'm more after the authentic "period correct" thing. Don't ask me why.....that's the wife's job.

Side note - that old Willys heater says "Harrison" on the back of it! Reckon that's who made it.

Because of their age I would expect them to be 6 volt.

Have your tried an alternator repair shop? They should be able to rebuild the motors for you back to better then new. The local shop does a lot of business rebuilding winch motors that people have smoked.

That's my thought too. I've got both Willys motors taken apart, and it appears I can save 'em with a good cleaning and lubing. I hope. That's my plan, try to save 'em first, replace second. If I DO save them and they ARE 6v, then I'll have to see if I can wire something in the circuit to drop the voltage down.

My next question is...does anybody know what's the right kind of grease/lubricant to use in small electric motors with brass bushings and a mild steel armature shaft? Don't want to put the wrong grease in there and have 'em sieze again.

My guess would be dielectric grease, looks almost clear. Radio Shack might have it.

The bearings are probably permanently lubricated types, i.e. sintered bronze that was soaked in light machine oil at the factory. I'm not sure if these things can be "recharged" or not. I'd just give'em a good cleaning & treat them to a shot of 3in1 every now & then.

Yeah, they look to be brass or bronze, and they're clamped in a kind of felt gasket, like a wick to hold oil or something. I just soaked them with 3-in-1 oil and added a little graphite too.
