'80 CJ5 4 cyl, 2 barrel... Strong gas smell for last week or so. My husband found that the oil is full of gas. Were told by his father (who I trust more than anyone to work on my cars---he used to build engines for Ford--but unfortunately now lives 8 hrs away so it is hard to get much help over the phone!) to check the carb that it sounds like the float not working correctly...
We bought this Jeep 6 yrs ago-husband and his father took out the mechanical fuel pump and put in electric pump at that time. 6 months ago we put a reman carbuerator in.... low and behold 2 months ago the head blew (due to overheating--yet another problem he thought he had fixed just prior to that happening), so we bought another head and had it reworked and we put it all back together....no problems till just in the ast 2 weeks -- the gas smell with gas in the oil...
Husband at first thought it was the fuel pump--then decided it was the float/needle/seat....talked to a mechanic friend last night who said the fuel pump/pressure could be causing the needle/seat to blow? The gas is not spilling out /running over the carb...it appears that when you are driving, it is perfectly fine, but once you cut the ignition off, that is when the gas is being pushed through.
Any ideas??? (i have learned so much in helping my husband work on the jeep in the last 6 yrs----can't you tell i have to do all the research?)
By the way---our Jeeps name is Damien....when we replaced spark plugs last yr just before changing the carb out---the parts number for the plugs at advance auto is '666'.... it all became so clear at that moment...
See what I am dealing with---it is the demon seed....

Did he leave the fuel pump on by mistake maybe?
Is it wired seperatly or hot with the key?
I did it once on our drag car and filled the crankcase with fuel.

just a shot here, but check your gas cap and gas tank vent. I had an old ford truck that someone stole the gas cap off of, replaced it with a locking cap but didn't get a vented one, the truck did not have a vented tank. went to start it the next day and something didn't sound right, checked the oil and found it full of gas.

what happened was the heat pressurized the tank and pushed the gas past the needle valve and into the engine.

I would say either this ^ or too much pressure from the electric pump. Do you know the PSI on the pump? If it turns out to be the pressure, you may want to look into putting a regulator on it.
