ok i just bought a 55 cj5, and the whole jeep is solid, no rust or anything. the only problem, well kind of a big problem is the tub. first off the tub is a later tub with jeep spelled in lowercase im not sure what year thats all i know, so tub is not origonal. that didnt bother me too much untill i found out that the tub supports on the bottom are completly made from stop sign pole. and today after i finished taking off most of the bondo i found huge dents, atleast 5 welded in patches on just one side. and its rusting through in a bunch of places.

i wouldint mind doing all that work have it been on an original body(or atleast one that is close to the same thing) but this isnt so i have and incorrect tub with stuff welded in all over it, rust in all of the seams etc and supports made of stopsign post.

i looked at replacment pannels but quickly added up the ones i need and found that would be way to much, atleast for a high schooler. replacment steel tubs all run over 3000 so thats out of the question.

so how much am i looking to pay for a decent tub with JEEP on the side(not sure the years) used, im looking for one thats rusted and needs work. id rather put my time into somthing that is close to origional than putting all of my time effort and money into a tub that is so fargone and not even origional. i dont need a vin either :D

could somone tell me the years the tub was the same, like from 55- 71? im not sure of the years. anyone on the east coast have an old tub they want to get rid of :D

You should be able to find a fixable one if you are ready to buy, can drive a ways to get it, and know what you need. Basically you can use any CJ-5 tub from 55 through 1969, and some 1970 tubs. Late 70 and 71 tubs have the gas tank in the back, but you can patch the filler hole and add the under-seat stuff. 72-75 are pretty close, but the letters on the side are wrong, and you'll have to change lots of holes in the firewall - plus the tank is in the back. 76-on has completely different front floors and dash, plus the wrong letters, so those are out.

If you buy an inexpensive MIG welder, you can do lots of repairs without special panels or lots of expensive metal working tools. The Jeep body is mostly flat panels or simple curves, so most holes and rust are fixable with steel sheet and a welder. A portable grinder would be useful too.

As to how much, I expect that depends on luck and how much you are willing to pay. Seems to me they go for anywhere from free to $1000, depending on condition and who the seller is. I'd say that $400-600 is fair for one that's straight and doesn't have a lot of rust. A good rule of thumb for used parts is 1/2 new, so I'd guess $1500 is probably tops for a reeeealy good one from a seller that knows what he has. Watch Willystech and any local Jeep/4wd boards too.

I wish that part of my tub was that solid. you should at least reevaluate fixing the tub you have. are you doing a show restoration or are you looking to build a nice solid trail jeep?

I would say around $400-$600 for a good used tub. You might find one cheaper depending on where you look. Like they said, keep an eye on the for sale section here.

Thinking about this, alot will depend on what part of the country the tub you find is in as well. ;)

Wow! You weren't lying about how bad it was. It could be fixed for something, but not what you are wanting it for. In cases like this, I would rather have a tub with holes rusted out in it than what someone has tried to fix. Ditto on the fact that it depends on location when pricing a tub. Right now, I am kicking myself for not buying one I found a year or so ago for $400. It was pretty much brand new and already stripped down to just the bare tub. Not even any surface rust on it. I messed around and let it get away from me and haven't found another one yet.

The best advice is to put an add in the wanted section here and keep an eye on the for sale section. Also, if you are like me and know a lot of people in your area, let every single person you talk to know what you are looking for and to keep an eye out for you. The CJ5 I just bought was sitting in a barn back in the middle of no where and came with a whole barn full of parts for $500. Only the guy that owned it knew it was there and it wasn't visible from even his driveway. The guy was a friend of the family that we hadn't talked to for years. We saw him at a funeral and my dad mentioned working on a Jeep and that is when we found out what he had. He just wanted to get his barn cleaned out. Lesson is, ask EVERYONE.
