Was doing some prep work on Tonk's engine today.
I removed the two oil gallery plugs on the drivers side of the engine prior
to painting the block & when I removed the one in front of the oil pump a
little teensy weenie itty bitty rod dropped outta the hole :?

It's about 2" long & about 1/8" diameter. I can't find it mentioned in the
FSM or parts book either

Anybody ever seen one of these before?

    Know what it is??

Did the engine rebuilders pop rivet my mains back in???

I checked my spare engine & there doesn't seem to be one in it

Also, out of curiosity, those plugs seem to seal up the bottom ends of a
couple of good sized holes dissappering up into the block at a 45 degree
angle. Anyone know where they go? They don't show up in the oiling diagram in the FSM-

    Thanks,

    Howard.

No idea, looks like something "extra" to me. You should probably be glad it ended up where it did, instead of causing harm elsewhere. Looks like you've been doing some wirebrushing!

I was thinking they go to the camshaft but since you say they're not on the oil flow chart I'm not sure. That rod shouldn't be in there, no doubt about that.

Usually you get extra pieces after you put something back together not when you take them apart.R)

Well, I guess "good size" is a relative term :)

What I meant was that the channels going into the block appear to be the same (or close too) diameter all the way up as where the plugs screw in. I guess I was figuring that if the rod belonged in there then the hole would have been the same size as it.

The flow chart shows the camshaft galleries but shows them lower down, to me it looks like these go shooting up over the shaft.

I'll have another look at it though, you may be right-

I didn't have that part in my old 134. It does look a little familiar though. I'm sure it doesn't belong in that oil gallery. Has this engine recently been rebuilt? From the pics it doesn't look like it.

Yup, just got it back last Thursday (a week late). I'd be lying if I said I was 100% happy with the job, there was a couple of things they messed up on along the way but instead of ranting I'm just going to let it fester inside for a while then go out & KILL THEM !!!

If you had never taken those plugs out you would still be in blissfull ignorance...

Like a friend of mine who just had to put his little finger into the crankcase drain hole and came out with a nut - but the engine was running perfectly. Drove him crazy worrying!

Some things are best not to know! ;-)

It doesn't look like they hot tanked the block. I highly recommend running the proper size tap through the bolt holes to clean them out, especially the head bolt holes. I always do them all. Besides allowing you to get accurate torque readings, it also allows you to hand spin most of the bolts back in.

I can tell you it doesn't belong there.

I also would be down there post haste to put a foot in someones butt as to how and why it got there. Silly me I clean all the oil passenges when I rebuild

Yeah, but I can't prove they put it there. That engine was a factory rebuild from Kaiser, it could have gotten in there - um, "there". Heck, the first time I ever pulled the oil pan I found a couple broken piston ring pieces in it, that was good for about 5 minutes of panic until I could get a look at the cylinder bores

Even though they should have pulled those plugs they did pull out the end ones, I guess they might have flushed the galleries.

    A bit.

    Radical.

I just finished my 134 and never saw that peice in there, only thing I can think of is maybe a mechancal oil pump to help pressureize that may have been added sometime in its life.....

Dont know for sure though, out of both 134's I tore apart to make 1, niether had that.

    I wish you were closer.
But if you can get it to Mid Tenn with all the parts I would be happy to go over that baby and put it together right for you.

I appreaciate the offer Billy but it ain't a gonna happen :(.

But I do have a question for you-

Right now the exhaust valves/springs are in the block, when re-installing the cam shaft am I going to have problems manuvering it in past the tappets or any sticky spots due to one of the exhast valves wanting to be open?

    Thanks,

    H.
