OK.... Here goes... Zoomer, I am going try and post that Serial Number plate of my '70 Kaiser CJ5. It has only the nine numbers displayed.
    Again the numbers are 851363423.......

well, never seen one like that but 363423 looks like your serial which puts you with a build date of Sept 69 which would be a 70 year model jeep. thanks for postin it.

Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

I did some Googling on the 8513 prefix, and the only references I found were for postal jeeps with an integrated hardtop, 4 cyclinder and automatic transmission. I'm starting to think that maybe Kaiser built some special DJs for the postal service in 1970, and since they differed enough from the standard DJs they used a special prefix.

    Thanks for posting Gilly.

Well this thing must have been put together with various jeep parts since it is the three speed twin stick Spicer 18 4X4- from what I have read and I would assume most postal jeeps were two wheel drive. It does have a 3" tube welded to the top corners of each rear quarter area for an integrated hard top possibly? Regardless thanks for the info as I am trying to trace this old buggy's footsteps....here's a pic for ya...

    Sounds likely.

    That's not a '70.

Sparky's right, there's alot of non-1970 parts there! Possibly a VIN tag swap by a previous owner in order to get a title??? Nice looking Jeep though!

    hood: snorkel hole
    front fenders: no marker lights
    Windshield frame: top mount wipers
    Taillights: not flush mount

    all older than 70

Hard to see the details but the grille looks to have small signal lights and not sure about the tailgate

    Good lookin jeep though

I agree for the most part with Randy. Hood is older (snorkle cutout), Grille is older (small turn signals), Windshield frame is older (top mounted wipers), tub is older (tub mounted outside rearview mirror). I'm not sure on the tailgate, my 1970 is blank but I don't know if its original or not.

Front fenders could be correct as early 1970 models didn't have fender markers.

Other swapable things like seats look newer, but that's to be expected.

Thanks guys for info.....I also read where the vin or serial number is suppose to be stamped on top of the frame rail around where the shocks attach? Didn't see anything yet......I am wondering now if the thing was a postal jeep converted to a 4X4 with the three speed or a different jeep altogether than the serial plate on the firewall.......The seats aren't stock from a 67ish camaro I'm told. What would you do to try and figure out which is the right scenario- kinda hope it is an older jeep with the wrong plate............more pics at

If I was to bet, I'd say older Jeep with VIN tag swap. Serial number is supposed to be stamped on the passenger side frame, above the front axle rear spring perch. Check out the diagram in the VIN thread I linked above.

Also note the top mounting sockets on the outside of the tub in the rear IIRC that was gone after about 66.

    Mine's 1/2 under the firewall/tub.

It's anywhere between the shock mount and rear spring hanger I believe. Pretty obviously hand stamped so I'm guessing the location moves a bit. ;)

Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

Well it isn't directly above the pass side frnt axle rear spring perch on top of the frame. I have all the undercoating off and she is down to bare shinny metal right now with no numbers in sight. I will try to get back towards the tub and what is left of that lower firewall some more tomorrow. Again, I am looking on top of the frame rail as opposed to the outter side of the frame rail- is that correct? Sparky it sounds as if it may be towards the shock mount but yours was 1/2 under the firewall/tub which would be towards the back of the jeep from the pass frnt rear spring perch? I would have to look under the battery tray to see the top of the frame rail between the frnt axle rear spring perch and the frnt shock mount on pass side.

I also figured out those rear mounts were for that non-collapsable soft top I saw on the site. It was for the bow which went across the back? and I wondered when that was no longer used. So this baby could be back further in age than I thought. Kinda fun for sure- like hunting treasure right in your own garage :)

Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

Well guys it was just to the rear of the perch mount. Just under that little piece of lower firewall spot welded to the tub. The numbers I am reading are pretty clear except for the six. I read 176200. From what I have printed out that would make it a 1964 Kaiser CJ5 with a bulid date between Aug. and Sept. ?

That would fit with the top wipers, rear bow mounts for the non-collapsable top, snorkel cutout, T90 three speed/Spicer 18 with twin shifter, the serial numbered 4J49145 F-134 motor, Dana 44 tapered rear shaft axle, Dana 27 frnt axle, gas tank under drivers seat, no door hinges, exteriorly mounted from tub drivers side rear view mirror, etc....

I will now have to do a search on the site and see how much of a hassle it would be to properly re-title the vehicle if at all possible up here in MI. Then again god forbid that serial number would come up stolen or something as it may be best to leave a sleeping dog lie....any suggestions appreciated......gilly

Leave it be. What difference does it make? Doesn't affect emmissions or anything.

I was thinking of having two tags myself, one with the title # and one with the frame #.

If you could find a frame serial number, we could probably help clear this up for you. With the characteristics you've described, it could be either an early CJ5 or an M38A1. IIRC, some of the diferences include: M38A1 had a bigger fuel tank, and the drivers floor was lowered under it compared to a CJ5. Fuel tank opening was also larger. On passenger side cowl area, there is a circular recess that isn't there on a CJ5. I don't own an M38A1, so these diferences I'm quoting could be incorrect, but it is what I remember seeing. If you post a picture of the passenger side or drivers side fuel tank area, I'm sure someone here can tell you for sure.

There's pics of M38A1s in the Picture Bank under "Rigs", http://www.earlycj5.com/gallery2/
