On my new 70, this is what the motor cover looks like. Seriously? This is how the thing is mounted? Right over the top of the W/S gasket? That would explain the Goober gasket today, but what did they seal it with to start with? Musta been some evolution goin' on.... This be ugly.

    X2....

But done a little neater. I used the masking tape trick...put tape around the perimeter of the motor, use the silicone, let it half-harden and pull the tape off.

I did nothing to seal it. Just put the 4 screws in and tightened them down. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow.

Ditto, the wiper motor itself is sealed inside, no real reason ot seal the cover to the windshield, in fact they didn't come sealed up.

One of the w/s I had had a small nest of some sort inside the motor cover - not sure if it was bees or mice or what, but for the 5 minutes it took to seal it I feel better about it...;)

I'll open that can-o-worms some day; there's plenty of stuff to tinker with first. Valve lifter. Brakes. And wiring, oh that'll be a blast! The wipers actually work, so I best leave it alone for now. Just didn't look so good all goobered up like that..........

if its that ugly and you want something different, convert to electric wipers. i have a motor on each wiper and can control them individually. kinda cool actually untill you have to reach across the jeep to flip the switch to wipe the passenger window..=\

    :? :?

That cover is over an electric motor, the intermediate-style setup with the motor on the outside outer bottom drivers side of the w/s. The setup is much better, IMHO, than the upper/inside wiper motors - esp. the junk "replacements" sold by the 4WD vendors.

Back on the original outside wiper motor cover.....If it didn't come with a seal around it originally, wouldn't it collect water inside the cover?

I put butyl rubber ribbon sealer around mine to keep the water out with a small drain hole in the bottom to allow the water to drain out. Works great. If you don't seal it up from the top half and down the sides the water can get trapped in there and cause all kinds of issues. I've had to throw out several motors because they were so rusted up they were useless except for parts and the covers were rusted from the inside-out. By sealing the top half and down the sides it kind of sheds the water away from the motor. I periodically go back and clear out the "drain hole" I created with a piece of welding rod. It can plug up with mud, dirt, etc. A couple of times I've gotten a little bit of water out of it, I suspect from condensation as it was clear and not dirty at all.

On my '75 there was a gasket under the top 3/4 of the motor cover. It was made of expanded rubber (foam) of some kind. Open at the bottom, so that rain pools in the cover if you leave the windshield folded down outdoors. Mine had rusty rings where the water was, until it rusted through and drained. I somehow recall that Jeep used the butyl caulk to seal the earlier models.

I used the set up from a postal Jeep. I filled in the original holes and made new ones (the postal pivot arms are an inch wider than the original holes in the willys) . Then flipped the assembly over and mounted the wipers on top. I then built a new mount for the motor. it works great! the motor is now on the inside of the windshield frame on top on the passenger side.
