I took the tranny brake off. When I bought the Jeep it was slinging gear oil everywhere. I assumed that the rear seal was leaking. Well on inspection the felt seal was in great shape but there doesn't seem to be a rear output seal installed in the rear bearing cap (see pics). Could it be that a PO just put in a felt seal and left out the output seal or is there something I'm not seeing?:?

By the way I've got a new seal from NAPA to put in.

The seal is there. The flat round thing pressed in the housing is the seal. Should be some rubber on the inside where it would meet the outside seal surface of the yoke. Make sure the seal surface on your yoke is in good shape, i.e. nice and smooth or the new seal won't do any good. Nickmil.

there could/should be a paper gasket behind the rubber/metal seal as well
call me old fashioned, but I still like and use the old style 3 piece set-up

Once you get it cleaned up and a new seal installed, before you tighten down the yoke nut for the last time, put a little bit of RTV under the washer. That keeps oil from migrating out via the splines.

Yup, what these guys said + I'd throw some rtv on the bolts that hold the parking brake backing plate on. Oil can seep out there too. I'd even coat the splines with a thin coat of rtv before you put the yoke on. Overkill maybe, but can't hurt;)

    Thanks Guys!
After looking thru some old posts and your replies, I think I've got it figured out.

Nickmil...The yoke surface where the seal runs wasn't grooved per se but was discolored and slightly pitted (microscopically pitted). I polished it up with some super fine emery cloth and it looks pretty good.

The Napa seal's rubber lip is much less formitable than the lip on the existing seal.....Hmmmm.

I think I may opt to find a National double lipper as mentioned in earlier posts and then will rtv everything as suggested.

Where might I get a new shaft nut and washer?

    You guys are cool!

i just ordered 2 from Krage's, but I'm sure most parts places or even a good hardware store will have one. I'd also make sure if you get it from the hardware to get a locking nut if you can. The one I got from Krage was peened? at the end so it would stay on.
