I'm in the process of going to disks up front on a 72 cj5 with a dana 30. I have the knuckles, calipers, and rotors off a 79 cj. Can I still use the drum spindles and outer axle shaft or do I need to change these parts as well?

    Thanks,
    *******

Yes you can still use the drum spindles and outer shafts. You may have to play with shim sizes to make them set correctly. If you can find a set of disk brake spindles they use a larger inner bearing which should theoretically be stronger but I have no imperical evidence to back that up.

Anyway you go, you can still use the outer shafts you currently have.

The inner bearing isn't any larger, just the diameter of the inside race of the inner bearing. This is due to the disc brake spindle being a larger diameter where the bearing rides. The disc brake spindle is stronger due to the material being thicker in this area.

Yup, like Hudsonhawk said, you can use the shafts you have now and the drum brake spindle. You will need a conversion inner race or shim yours out some to make the rotor centered properly in the caliper. I don't remember the whole part # right now but your current inner bearing race ends with the last two digits of 10. If you use the inner race with the same # except the last two digits of 11 that will solve your problem. The race with the 11 as last two digits will fit your existing bearing but is thicker and will space the hub and rotor the correct amount. You will need a National Seal # 8430s also. You will not be able to drive the seal in all the way or it will hit the bearing, but will be able to drive in far enough so it will stay in place.

The only difference with the drum brake and disc brake outer axle is the drum brake axle is a smaller diameter where the shield is pressed on. This fits in a pressed-in seal in the back of the drum brake spindle. The disc brake outer axle is a larger diameter and there is not a pressed in seal on the back of the disc brake spindle. This uses a slide on V type seal that holds tension between the axle and the back of the spindle as well as a small V type seal behind the inner spindle bearing to keep debris away.
One of these days I need to write all this stuff down for this site. Nickmil.
