My 72 cj5 with a 304 has a dead fuel gauge. How do I test it? It just sits on E. Thanx.

It's either the wiring, sending unit, or fuel guage (probably in that order). You can test the sending unit with an ohm meter. Should be around 10 ohms empty and 80 ohms full. If the sending unit is okay, then locate the wire that attaches to the fuel guage (at the fuel guage) and retest with an ohm meter. If it doesn't read the same as the readings you got at the sending unit itself, then check the wiring. If it does and the rest of the guages in the cluster work (esp. temp), then it's the fuel guage.

to test the guage, momentarily ground the sender terminal with the ignition on, the guage should peg full. if it does not, your regulator inside the fuel guage is most likely toast.

to test the regulator, turn on the ignition and test with a meter, negative to ground, positive to the terminal that has the strap going to the temp guage. you should read a fluctuating 5v. if you get nothing, the regulator is burnt out, if you read 12v, the points in the regulator are stuck together. either way you will need to get another guage

do not throw that old guage away when you replace it, I am working on a replacement for the regulator.

    Hey Chuck,

I'm From NB. I head over to Plymouth to snack at the Cabby Shack and then take the power lines home through Standish.
