Ok I am tired of being on my head trying to get the guages working on my 67 CJ5. Has anyone pulled the speedo out to rewire the guages? How hard is it to do?

It's not particularly hard to remove,(there are four nuts on studs holding it) but you won't move it far; the wires will leave you pretty much stuck to sitting there with your head between your knees instead of lying on your back. I don't know of an easy way to work there, but the best I can manage is to take the passenger seat out, lay a heavy blanket or comforter down in the bed area and into the footwell, then use an old pillow to rest my headbone on. Also, if it is an option for you, fold the widshield down and see through the defroster openings, to work under there while looking sown from the top. Last resort, hire a midget contortionist electrician.

When my dad was building his Jeep, he had the seats and gas tank out, and he built some platforms out of plywood and 2x's to make the floor flat from the "step" behind the seats all the way to where the floorboard angles up, so he had a comepletely flat surface to lay on... Still a pain, but much more comfortable..

usually with a little patience, you can (after disconnecting the battery terminals) remove the four nuts holding the guage cluster in, and carefully pull it back and turn it face down. then you can reach in through the hole to remove the wires. if you are really lucky, you can turn the guage all the way around and the wires will be right at the hole for working on it. give it a try, beats a half hour headstand:coffee:

    Is your dash welded in?

If not, You might be able to remove all the bolts from the face of it, unbolt the steering column, and tilt the dash forward, pivoting on the 2 bolts that run parallel to the dash face at the lower ends.

It is not welded but the bolts have been painted over. I am ready to start taking things apart and see what happens.
