    Tie rods and drag links?

I'm going to convert my steering over to a drag link, and can't seem to find heavier-than-stock rods and links. All I've found so far is for street rods and race cars, and 1) they don't seem to be any heavier than what I have already, or 2) designed for really big Heim joints. Not trying to build a rock crawler, just want to beef it up some.

    Any thoughts?

    TIA

Ya know Thad, lotsa guys run the stock-sized TREs without any issue of breaking them. More often than not, they end up bending/breaking the tie rod or drag link itself, not the ends. Not saying they won't break, but the tubes are lots more vulnerable than the ends IMHO.

If you're going to go upgrade, I'd suggest trying to find a two-holed right side knuckle from a Commando so you can avoid the two-holed TRE. In hindsight, that's what I should have done when I went to the manual Saginaw setup.

R&P builds dom tube tie rods to custom lengths that use jam nuts instead of clamps. 503-557-8911. They can build them to fit CJ tie rod ends or the heavier Chev style. You will have issues if you go with the Chev ends. The taper is different (can be overcome) but the real issue is the diameter of the end body. They are so large that they hit each other when turning when using the stock spacing between the holes on a double hole knuckle. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. IF you can find some of the hard to find M38a1 tie rod ends, they use a 3/4" thread instead of the stock CJ 11/16" thread. Other than that, I don't think the end is any stronger. I've flogged my Jeep for years with the stock tie rod ends with no issues. I have upgraded to stronger tie rod and drag link however. Nickmil.
