Hello, I am new to the world of jeeps. I am looking at a 1957 CJ5 project jeep and I just have a few questions. Are all CJ5's 4wd? Are CJ5's full time 4wd, or do they have a transfer case shifter? I'm sure most people will be annoyed with these questions, but I have no idea. Thanks for your help!

All CJs are 4WD, DJs were 2WD.

'57 CJ's have two shifters on the t-fer case.

Did they make DJ5's in 1957? I just found out this one is 2wd. Also, is there any difference between the CJ and DJ jeeps other than 4wd?

    DJ-3As but not DJ-5s.

What's the serial number? Any pictures?

I noticed this jeep has 4 lug wheels. I know that CJ5's had five. It looks like a CJ5 body to me though. Is it possible that this is a CJ5 body on a DJ3A chassis?

Possible but tough to do I'd think due to a shorter DJ-3A frame. Again, do you have a SN?

    That's a mid-60s ECJ5 body, not a '57.

Intresting , Is the raditor out of it or does it have the fan mounted to the front of the raditor? Like sparky said the grill looks to be a mid or late 60,s model

I would guess that it's a late 60s DJ-5 with a Chevy 153 and a Powerglide. I've seen that shifter before ... Commando? An under-hood picture would be helpful.

That shifter looks postal. Methinks that was a DJ that had a CJ-5 body dropped on it. The only think that doesn't add up is the angle of the steering column, compared to the original cutout in the dash. That makes me think it has a Ross-type steering setup in it.

Looks like mebbe this thing was cobbled together from several donor vehicles, and had a '57 VIN tag attached to it.

    Underhood pics?

Ok, here is the serial number: 8505 10875. Which I believe is a serial number for a 1965 CJ5. Is this correct?

Have you found the frame serial number? Those plates are easy to switch.

    No, 8505 isn't a CJ prefix. That's a DJ prefix. 8305/8405 are CJ prefixes.

Ok, I finally got the jeep to my house. The engine is a four cylinder, and the transmission is a 3 speed auto. Where can I find the frame vin plate? The body serial number shows up as a 1965 DJ5. Does this look like a 65 DJ5 to everyone?

Try the search function if you haven't already. We have discussed this topic quite frequently here in the past.

    I turned this up: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/search.php?searchid=153028

Strider, I'm guessing you're '57 has the transmission and transfer case to match the :v6: in your Jeep?

Why a '57? Just wondering what made you pick that year.
