    Hi all,

Been thinking about an '82 CJ5 with the 4 cylinder engine - 151 I believe.

Could anybody comment on this engine and how good of an engine it is or isn't?

I realize it won't be a high HP engine, but mainly looking for reliability thoughts and how well the engine performs in the CJ5.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Well, here's the Jeeptech page if you have not seen it.
    http://www.jeeptech.com/wiki/index.php/Engine/Factory/GM_151_I4
I don't have any personal experience with this engine, however I've read that it's a reliable but unexciting engine. It was also used in GM cars and light trucks (the S-10 AFAIK). This engine was usually (always?) paired with the lightest and least desirable of the Jeep transmissions, the SR-4 and T-4. I'd think these transmissions would be more of a liability than the 151.

<edit> link seems to have problems now - it should come back eventually.

There's a SR-4/T-4 link on the same site.

Only new Jeep I ever owned was a CJ7 with the Iron Duke. Carburetor sucked and the dealer didn't know how to work on it. Top end was around 85IIRC. But in 4wd it worked fine. That was along time ago and I would think someone could workout the bugs in one and have a pretty good jeep depending on what they wanted to do with it. I'd own another if the right one came along.

Dead reliablie, uninspiring as Tim said. I've owned two in GMs.

Friend of mine had one in a Scrambler, we tried to kill it. Never succeeded.

I mean we really tried. Boyink saw some of it at the Dunes. We took it for a swim at Attica, all to no avail. It wouldn't die.

My son grenaded the 151 in his old '81 Scrambler. It had about 80K on it, he was in deep snow with 5 guys in the back. He got it stuck and over-revved it (he was 17... ) and spun a bearing, 150 miles from home.
It had a knock but still ran... we got halfway home and it grenaded on the highway... put a baseball-sized hole in the block
Towed it the rest of the way home with a towbar and a CJ7

bought a grand am a few years back for $175. 150K+ miles, had an odd version of the iron duke with 2 cyls closer together. one cylinder had broken rings, it would smoke and piston slap was scarry until it got warm. would go 80MPH (never really tried to go faster R) ) no problem and get up to that speed at a reasonable rate. put a few thousand miles on it trying to finish it off and never did. wound up trading it in to get rid of it. reliability and ability to take abuse is close but not equal to a slant 6
