    Hi all,
yesterday I went 4X4ing at Brown's Camp, and there was a guy up there with a 1969 CJ-5 with a 225 V6 in it and he told me that he had trouble getting up the trails because his engine didn't have enough power. I went up the same trails he was talking about with no problem and I have the 258-6... I thought that th V6 was more powerful than the l-6. Am I under the wrong impression or was this guy just confused?

    Wil......

he is confused, or has serious mechanical problems, or maybe needs to downshift.............

my 231 had plenty of power with 3.73's in it for normal or heavy 4x4in (as much as stock springs would allow anyway).

    lol..downshifting would be good..=)

the i-6 has alot of torque...but the v-6 has that 589 lb flywheel which carries enough centrifugal momentum to get you up mt everest.
    v-6 is lighter and shorter...

    R) R) Yeah that flywheel will make a man of you if you pick it up very often. Seriously, the 225 will make all the power that Jeep needs.

Judging from the condition of his Jeep it probably was a combination of the 3... Thanks for all the responses... I was considering putting a
V6 in my Jeep and I was a tad concerned that I was turned around on the engine.

when i first got my jeep, i had 3.73 gears and the t14 tranny.

driving at altitude going up steep inclines i had trouble even in low 1st.
a new carb and hei helped a little, but new gearing and a sm420 is what really solved the problem. got all the power i need and then some.

I was a little concerned with mine when I first got it. But wow what a tuneup and proper adjustments can do. Sometimes I think my V6 is way more than I need. .... Nah! :D

There are so many variables, it's hard to make generalizations about engines. Certainly the 225 is powerful for its size, but the 258 is no slouch either. The (very) general rule of thumb is that power is proportional to displacement. Thus the 258 should make about 15% more power than the 225. However, a lot depends on the bore:stroke ratio; the smaller it is, the lower the torque curve will peak. Horsepower is essentially torque times rpm, so the higher the rpm of the torque curve peak, the more power the engine makes. Both engines have a 3.75" bore, with the 258 having a 0.5" longer stroke (3.4" v. 3.9"). The stroke of the 258 is pretty long, but not uncommonly long for inline 6s.

So, very generally just from the numbers, the 258 will produce more torque than the 225 at a lower RPM and about the same power, given the edge in displacement. This is born out by the hp, torque numbers for the 258 of 150@3800, 240@1800 v. the 225 of 160@4200, 235@2400.

Again, there are so many other variables that make this a very broad generalization: gearing, condition of the engines, modifications, weght of the vehicle (including the engine) etc. but I'd say they are roughly the same in power, with the advantage to the 258 with a little more grunt at lower speed.

I've wheeled all over Brown's camp, on every trail up there at one time or another in my '59 CJ-5 and 231 V-6 with no power problems. The 231 is just a more modern version of the 225. The guy probably had too big a tire for the gear ratio he was running or as was said earlier had mechanical issues not allowing the engine to perform properly. Brown's camp IIRC doesn't get much above 3,500' so I doubt it's an altitude problem. Nickmil.
