Diodes are like a one way check valve for electricity. They allow current to flow one direction, but not the other. Reason for them in this application is to keep the tow vehicles power from back feeding throughout the wiring of the vehicle and causing "crazy lights" which are lights that flash or come on when you don't want them to.

So I stared at the wiring a bit....and the diodes can't be the issue.

There are 3 wires heading to the back of the Jeep. One for taillights, one for the left turn signal/brakelight, and one for the right turn signal/brakelight.

Remember - I have working taillights and turnsignals yet. So the diodes (and all the related wiring) must be fine, otherwise I'd lose both brakelights *and* turn signals as they share the same wire.

Soooo......it has to either be the wiring between the brake light switch and turn signal housing, or the turn signal switch itself.

Stan Day has a great Flash piece (the we really should get linked into our tech pages, BTW - mental note to self) that shows how the turn signal works:

What I can't figgire yet is how the station wagon's brakelight fuse going out has to do with the Jeep...technically the diodes should have isolated the Jeep's turn signal unit from being affected by any shorts in the rest of the wiring while being towed....

Check the dimmer switch on the floor for bad or rusty connections. I just went through the same issue a few weeks ago.

Edit: No headlights was my problem, not brakelights.....too early in the morning to be posting

    Got it.

There was a loose connection under the dash....there's a little tri-angular connection between the turn signal harness and the firewall..and the brake light wire had pulled out.

So brake lights are working, but now I notice that I don't have a right front turn signal...and when in parking light mode it's shining brigher than the left, so must still be some things hooked up wrong.

Sounds like you have the turn & parking light wires reversed on the right front.

Thats what I thought too...so tried reverseing them and now don't have any turn signals up front...

At any rate...it's too danged nice to be working on it...rather drive it.

On the diodes..read back as their purpose was explained...
