I am pondering new ways to install rear tail lights so they are out of the way and you can have a tire carrier montued to the side rather than centered. My idea is taking a set of rear wrap around corner protectors, the ones that cover the whole corner, and graft a round hosuing to monut the taillight to the corner guard. sort of making it blend into the steel. Kind of like they do for motorcyckles when the flushmount a tailight in the rear fender. This way it is pretected because you are using thick steel for a housing and you can have them protruding a little bit from the sides and obstacles would slide off the housing.

putting the lights out to the side more, so you can have more room for a spare tire rack and cooler or storage boxes

You can always flush mount them, thats what I intend to do, got me a set of flush mount LED's about 2 weeks ago, will get them mounted in a few more weeks.

I've seen a few jeeps with 73-87 Chevy pickup taillights grafted into the corners. Looks pretty sharp to me.

I have to be the voice of dissent. I personally don't like the look of the Chebby truck taillightts on a CJ. I prefer the original look. But that's just me.

Uh, well, I wasn't gonna say it but since you did first....me too...;)

The truck lights always looked too big for the rear of a Jeep to my eye.

You could also just put some flush mount taillights and integrate them into the tire carrier swingout portion. They don't have to be mounted to the body and your not gonna drive around with the swingout open, I hope.

What about mounting some lights into the bumper? flushmount them by the corners and they'd be out of the way. Not sure if that would still be in your way for the planned tire carrier/ cooler rack...
