well this cj is getting better little by little.
    d27a closed knuckle front

after driving for a while with the new suspension and shackles, i decided it was time to have both the caster and camber checked and readjusted. after i got used to the great improvement i began to notice the remaining wander and no return to center of the steering wheel.

while it was on the lift the adjuster guy pointed out that my driver side front wheel was loose top and bottom. and it was. so part of my caster problem is that. i didn't catch it when i was repacking the wheel bearings.

i had inspected, repacked and tightened the wheelbearings and hubs to spec so i know those are ok.

is there anything i should be aware of when i begin to repair the kingpins? is it possible to replace the kingpins with adjustable units (if there is such a thing?

    parts list should be:
kingpin bearing, cup, shim, cap. two of each per side?

also a knuckle seal kit as long as everything is apart?

what do I fill this and the knuckles with in other words, what is the current version of pudding or formula for these?

i have my fsm by my side as usual.

Steve: Straight 140 wt gear oil will work fine in the knuckles if you don't want to mix up pudding.

    New kingpin bearings - 4
    races - 4
    knuckle seals - 2

Shim as needed to get 12-16 lbs. resistance using a fish scale hooked in the eye of the knuckle with no seal installed.

Oil can't and should not get to the brakes!!!!

The spindle seals the outer portion of the knuckle off from the fluid in the knuckle.

Caps should be in good shape and reusable in 99% of cases. Just slide into a new bearing seated in a new race and bolt it down (with shims if needed).

What sparky said...... For me, I adjust the bearing pre load by feel. If you aren't comfy with this, do it per spec.....

i assume i am going to have to remove the drum, spindle, backing plate, brake hydrolic hose and fitting, etc. incl the axle and universal in short, everything? as per the fsm.

i plan on only doing the driver side for the time being since the pass side seems fine.

i got all my stuff from krage. iirc i got new caps and returned them because the old ones were better quality parts then the new. nasty greasy job that is. i would consider switching to knuckle studs while you have it all apart.

yep, my order went to krage late friday by phone.
i was thinking about the studs after reading vern's writeup but not sure if i will or not yet. after considering the grinding for the stud head clearance and all for a dana27a axle, i'm not sure i want to take it on.

it really wasn't a big deal. just clean up the edge a little and it will clear.
if anything just do some of them as mentioned in the write up. just having that little extra assurance that the wheel won't seperate from the axle is worth it!
