I am thinking bout changing my dash to this way to run a seperate speedo and other gauges, i am watching a dash panel on ebay and the dome thingys are missing.

Dash lights. The M-38, the M-38A1 and the M-35 (and prolly others) share the same dash cluster, and it is back-lit with red covers over the bulbs so that they aren't easily spotted and they don't destroy your night vision.

The really cool thing about these gauge clusters though is that they are only held in with 4 Dzus fasteners. 4 - quarter-turns of a flat-blade screwdriver and the whole cluster is in your lap. Lots easier to deal with than standing on your head to get the fuel gauge working again! ;)

Kind of a thread hijack, but does anyone know where you could buy that dash plate / light assembly from? I've looked before, but never came up with anything.

Try a surplus vendor. You can often get the whole gauge cluster with the gauges for a song, they are not rare by any means. If you can find a dealer that has deuce-and-a-halfs, they will be much cheaper than a Jeep guy. Fair warning though, the gauges (except for the speedo) are all electric and 24-volt. Civvy Stewart-Warner gauges drop right in though, and are close to correct-looking. ;)

    Hey thats my dash!

As you can see from the picture of my dash I need to get some of the correct fasteners. 2 bolts just doesn't look right. The red lights are pretty neat looking at night. Not sure how other old jeeps are but it also has a high-low dash light setting.

I might also see what it is going to take to get the original temp and oil pressure gages going so I can get rid of the ones zip-tied to the steering wheel. I found that they are disconnected, I just have to figure out why.

My M38 speedo glows in the dark. Pretty neat. I don't have the dome lights (prolly removed by the PO??) but the speedo also has gaps behind the glass for back lights. I think it looks cleaner like that.

As mentioned - after market gauges slide right in the other 4 spots.

Considering using a mil-dash in SSDutch as well. Will an aftermarket speedo work as well?

Any audio-board jockeys here? I've used rack systems that had power supplies with little pull-out lights that would work really trick in that dash panel if the diameter was close.

This one has the lights pulled out, it's just not obvious they are lights:
