My trans is out and it has a metal tag that reads: PUG J 016398.
I described it to Herm and he thought it was a Ford 4 speed syncro because of the tin top and the hearst shifter on the side. I'd sure like to figure out what I got, any ideas?

I can't cross reference those numbers with any info I have.
Maybe go to some Ford enthusiast sites... :?

Measure the tranny case from the front face to the rear face.

Here is some info I found:
10.12" front to back, identified as a T & C 4 speed. Has a 10-bolt top cover. There was a OD model as well, from 78-88 Grenadas and F150 trucks. Don't know if these are side-loaders.

A Borg WArner T10 will have a 10.00" case. Don't know if these are side-loaders.

NP435 and T19 are top loaders...

Herm is thinking it's a Ford Toploader transmission. I'd be more inclined to think that your "P" is actually an "R"; that would make it a RUG-J from a '67 Comet or Fairlane 390. Here's a good site about Toploaders: http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html

<edit> BTW if it's a RUG you should be able to fit a top from a T-176 Jeep transmission and get rid of the side shift, if you prefer.

Wow tim, I'd love to be able to put a top shifter on it. Thanks a lot.

I think it was Nick that said the T-176 top will fit on the Ford toploaders. Makes sense - the T-176 is a toploader. Hopefully you will get his attention and he'll comment.

    Tim,
Is that number for the whole transmission that I look for the shifter for or just the top?
