That's true and is an option for me if I can find something with the correct gear ratio.

Personally, I like and have been building this Jeep in one of two way per job; I either do as much research as I can, figure out the best way to build it, and build it one time and make it the best I can, or I half-*** it with the expectation of rebuilding it in the near future.

I'd prefer for axles to fall under the first category, and I'd like to build them once, but I'll have to see what happens.

It is possible you could find a narrow open 30 with an offset flanged 44 open or TracLoc in 3.73s. Both were offered in that ratio, and 3.73s are common. Or possibly if they came out of someones project and the 30 had been regeared to 4.88 (matching the offset 44 optional ratio) or the 44 to 4.27 (matching the 30 optional ratio), or both had been regeared to another ratio. There may be some factory-equipped 4.27 offset 44s out there, but they would have been from a 134-equipped Jeep IIRC.

Kinda think that, since the offset axles are scarce, it's not realistic to wait for the ideal combination to come along. Suggest you pick up the offset 44 when offered; the 30 coming along with it is a bonus. Then look at what you have and determine your plan.

    There are alternatives.

You pretty much can’t go wrong buying any old offset flanged D44 you happen across. The narrow D30 is also a good investment. You can easily resell either of those if your circumstance changes.
To fully rebuild them with high quality parts will cost as much as a full engine build.

Well Ken, out West you can. The Border Patrol beat the snot out of their Jeeps so if you run across one of these, you need to check for bent axle tubes and/or bent axles if you can. The one I bought was great except for the inner pinion race had spun in the housing. It was repaired and that axle lives in my Jeep today.

If the front axle happens to be a Dana 30 with 3.73 gears, I know a guy in Colorado who wants one for his Commando

I come across narrow D30s pretty frequently, but pass them up (I have 2 or 3). They are usually $150 or less. I have only come across a flanged offset axle once, and passed because it was $500 about 10 years back. I have never broken a two-piece axle in 40 years of playing with Jeeps, but I don’t rock crawl or run tire taller than 31/32”.
Anyone have a clean early body tub that needs some NT D30’s?

Yep. You could no doubt get rid of several of them around here but small issue with shipping expense.

A drive to Disney world doesn't sound so bad right now... just a little detour south on our way or as we head home.

You could buy a pair of custom built 44s with ARBs for less than taking all your kids to Disney World

I appreciate the offer, but I don't think I'll go with that at this time.

Pull the covers to verify condition and gear ratio. The rear end alone is worth that if in good shape. Most were 3.73 or 4.88 which were the v6 ratio. 4 cylinders were 4.27 or 5.38 which are pretty rare. These came with Trac locks which are basically an open carrier in reality. Very common to find splines on short shaft twisted. Came with 10" brakes so another bonus to find one that has been switched to 11".
