Dana is home and she isnt running very good. Symptoms are not wanting to idle except with choke almost completely engaged. 1st had to replace fuel pump since that went south from just old age no problem. Then rebuilt the carb and checked point gap. Seems as long as fuel is being drawn into carb she'll run although spitting and coughing at idle and rather fast idle at that. Open the choke and she dies. Checked for possible leaks around carb base with starting fluid and engine didn't change speed or skip a beat. PO broke one of the bolts off in manifold and used a nut bolt and washer combo to seal carb base as it seems to have exhaust gases going through it for what specifically I'm not really sure, so probably going to have to pull it and send out to get drilled and tapped. Btw stock rochester 2g and intake. Any suggestions on what it might be woud be appreciated. Also any ideas on getting that broken bolt out would help too.
    Thanks Jim C

2 1/2 turns on the jets about? Hook up vacuum gauge and see if there is vacuum. Could be a leak somewhere, causing card not to suck in fuel.

Barry I've thought about it but Dana isnt ready and neither am I. Unfortunately my ankles still aren't up to the task of that clutch. Was thinking about a rental but even if I found one it just wouldnt be the same. I cant leave Dana home if I'm going wheelin. I just dont think she would understand.

Have you checked your fuel lines for cracks, that maybe sucking in air? That happened to me once...

sounds like air leaking around carb base, due to broken bolt. pics would help, BUT if you remove the carb, HOPEFULLY the bolt is sticking up above the manifold. IF it is you are lucky and can weld a nut to the bolt and remove it after soaking it w/oil and heating up (just warm, not glowing) the manifold. if that doesn't work, take the manifold off and have a machine shop remove it.

Yea I'm afraid Ill have to do that. Although I've owned her for about 6 years and this is the 1st time I had a problem like this, and other than regular maintenance no real repairs have been done. She just always ran good. So to have it start all of a sudden just doesnt make sense. Also like I said I sprayed starting fluid around base of carb and it didnt change the way it ran. As I understood it this should speed the engine up or something? :? Or am I incorrect in this thought :?

That should cause it to speed up if there's a vacuum leak.

Carb cleaner should cause a sputter as well.

Sounds like maybe got some foreign material in the idle circuit if you can't find a vacuum leak. Might pull out the idle mixture screw(s) and blow through them with some carb cleaner and compressed air. Sometimes that will clean them out and allow proper fuel flow at an idle. If it only wants to run with the choke partially closed then sounds like it's running lean (too much air, not enough fuel). closing the choke restricts the air and allows more fuel from the power circuit to feed the engine. That's something that can happen just driving down the road. Let us know what you find. Nickmil.

Well just got back to Dana today and thought I had it figured out but still no go. Found some of the gaskets I used werent the right ones. So I put in the ones that matched the old ones as close as possible. Checked all passages used carb cleaner and compressed air to blow through them.S**t I just hate messing with carbs. Seems as if no matter what I do they dont want to cooperate.

18" to 20" at idle for our elevation
if you can get it to idle at all
so the carb work didn't change a thing?
