I tried the youtube rabbit hole got immediately overwhelmed by it. Sometimes it better for me to learn in bite sized increments.

I'll be installing heavy duty shackles from an m38a1 and in doing so will be swapping my u bolts for new. I need to wiggle my leafs around a bit in the rear cause they seem a bit crooked currently haha. So all new U bolts for me and I'll save any of the old ones if they come off and seem reusable in an emergency.

I had a .30cal wooden ammo box I picked up in Malibu when the old M.A.S.H. set was being transformed into a state park. Have no idea if it was real or just a prop but it looked cool and was the perfect size for all of my spare parts, including 2 U-joints. And being wood, it didn't scratch or dent the inside of my Jeep if it got loose and it made a good "sittin' tool" at campsites when working on wheels, etc. Anyways, it was always packed and ready to go, just had to throw it in before heading out to the trails. Point being here I didn't carry all of the "necessary" spare parts and tools for "wheeling" all the time. My on board tool storage boxes in my Jeeps were limited to the day to day essentials including jacks (2), plywood base, lug and combo wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers; very basic. Also gloves, rags, and a mini can of WD 40. There were more specific tools in the ammo box including sockets and a breaker bar; all the heavy stuff.
FWIW, Harbor Freight has decent plastic ammo boxes that'll hold all your stuff nicely. Costco had an interesting "organizer" consisting of several small "ammo" boxes in a plastic tray holder, could be cool. IMHO, surplus metal ammo boxes are good for only one thing: holding ammo in a nice dry closet. Using them for tool boxes, etc. is so bubba; doesn't take much to get them dented and rusty.

Not sure if anyone suggested this tool but having AAA with max towing is one tool I never go anywhere in my old Jeep without. Yeah, off road isn't covered but for everything else...

BTW, if you want to do an easy "trial" trail run, think about heading south to my 'hood. Right up the street is the Cleveland N.F. and the Maple Springs road. Nothing terribly difficult but a good spot to lock the hubs, air down and see how everything works. Straight down the 405... LMK if you're interested.

That awesome!!!! it’s funny, once a month, I go find this dirt strip along the edge of a horse path out here in Burbank. Just to lock the hubs and put in the four-wheel-drive to keep everything lubed. Once they closed vehicle access Griffith Park, there’s really nowhere I can go around here with dirt to test things out so… That tip is gonna be a huge asset!

I put together a similar toolbox scenario yesterday. I keep all my tools, jumper cables, Jack, breaker bar, tire inflators… In the toolbox under the seat. Then, my miscellaneous spare parts and fluids, etc. go in a canvas surplus bag I got at the surplus store. Looks the part and I can just throw it in there before Long drives.
