I recently got invited to a vintage off-road show/trail-run in March. I havent offoraded my cj5 AT ALL since the restoration and got to thinking about misc spare parts and tools i might need for the trip.

They say it'll be "easy trail riding". Just a day trip out at Gorman, CA.

Want to add some must-haves to my list. And maybe get some suggestions for tools or parts I should have riding with me day-to-day, just incase.

What do you guys usually take with you when doing light trail runs etc?
REASONABLE suggestions please  I wont be able to take a spare Parts-Jeep with me LOL.

    My Jeep is pretty stock:
    1964 CJ5
    f134
    t-98 trans
stock ride height and wheel size
    ross steering box
    lunchbox locker in rear

Here's what I have riding in the toolbox currently:
    TOOLS:
    • Socket set
    • vice grips
    • Screw drivers
    • needle nose pliers
    • ratcheting wrenches
    • allen key
    • adjustable monkey wrench.
    • Razor blades
    • flashlight
    Spare Parts:
    • Thermostat housing
    • extra thermostat
    • fan belt
    • old dist points (from before pertronix conversion)
    Misc:
    • Jumper cables
    • tire flat/inflator pump/ and tire plug kit
    • extra lug nuts
    • jack
    • tire iron
    • extra worm clamps
    • a short length of steel wire
    • a short length of rubber gas line
    • electrical tape
    • fuses
    • dyi gasket sheet
    • permatex "the right stuff" grey
    • zip ties
    Fluids:

    JB weld (quick set)
    Gorilla brand duct tape
I would take a box knife rather than razor blades.
    electrical wire
    fire extinguisher
    2 jacks: bottle & hi-lift
    fire extinguisher
    plain ole' combination wrenches
    channel lock pliers
If you might switch back to the old distributor don't forget the ballast resistor & coil.
    bungee cords
    first aid kit

You want to have anything specific to your jeep. Or of immediate need.

Walkie talkies if you have em
    Motor oil
    Oil filter
    gear oil
    Brake fluid
Take distilled water instead of coolant (serves more purposes. batteries, first aid)
    Fire extinguisher
    Fuel
    Fuel filter
    Cooler
    Ice
    Lunch
    Beverages
    Chair
    Tp & wipes
    Gal ziploc bag
    some Cash
    bikini top
    Snacks
    Good attitude

If you flat tow by disconnecting the rear driveshaft get another u-joint same make as what is currently installed so you can swap just a cap and needles should you drop one in the mud.

Every time I work on my jeep (or my dirt bike for that matter) at home, I try to use only the tools I carry with me. If anything is needed that I don’t have, it gets added to the kit.

A small tarp is handy too in case you need to crawl under in wet mud.

For the most part... jack, chains, come-along, axe, saw, etc. for self-rescue. (PTO winch)

Electrical tape, oil and a gallon of coolant, stop-leak, baling wire, fine sandpaper.

After that, basic hand tools - screwdriver, pliers, crescent wrench, etc.

I don't plan on major mechanical work because in NH I'm always within walking distance of civilization. Oh yeah, compass, map, and a flashlight :D.

Extra pair of shorts would have come in handy on a couple of my mis-adventures.

I'm in for the insight, have nothing useful to add, but think this is a great thread. I've been meaning to do a deep dive on the "necessary" tools for my jeep.

Curious: what is this? Care to share? Is it an "open to the public" kinda thing? Didn't hear anything at Wrightwood...

Used to 'wheel Gorman/Alamo Mtn./ Lockwood Valley decades ago in everything from my '73 V8 CJ5 to my '51 F-head Wagon. Getting the Wagon up the Grapevine was an arduous task, even with the overdrive. And that's when semi's did 60-65. I can't imagine driving anything with a 134 up that hill now.
As for the trails, most of the Gorman side was pretty tame. It was when you dropped Miller trail off the top of Alamo that things got dicey. And the trails through Lockwood or Mutau could get pretty techy. I did all that in my Wagon, but I was running Rancho springs and shocks (4" lift) and 32" tires. The D18 and 5.38's made up for the lack of HP.

As for what to take, looks like folks above have a good bit covered.
But I would make sure you have attachment points on the frame both front and rear and proper sized (soft or hard) shackles to fit. You'll need these for recovery if you get stuck and someone else has a winch. You do not want to wrap a winch cable or strap around an axle.

I carry a decent shovel, not those little WW2 chinesium copies of an entrenching tool (you'll find enough broken ones up there). A couple 10' x 10" strips of carpet can help you get out of a muddy hole as well. They roll up and stow in a plastic garbage bag nicely.

BTW, you didn't mention tire size. If you plan to air down, you'll need a way to air back up. I believe Rigid has a battery powered inflate-a-matron available at your local Home Repot. Pick up a reasonably accurate gauge as well.

And for the 134, Pertronix or not, a spare cap and rotor!

    EDIT ADD: GLOVES!

There are a lot of variables. A bone stock cj in a crowd of experienced cjs for one afternoon close to home will need a lot less prep then a four day solo trip.

Wheeling with like vehicles is pretty forgiving if you forget something. I feel like the worst thing that happens to our jeeps is loosing a spindle from the knuckle or a flange off the rear axle.

Grampa's jeep lost a spindle in a sea of jk's and had to use a xj as a dolly. James lost his spindle with four other cj5s and drove out with 2wd and limited steering.

Why I am doing the stud conversion on my spindles, but yes if wheeling with like vehicles you can even get by without a spare tire

I will add: I usually carry 2 gallon of motor oil. If you develop a leak there is likely hood you might need to add oil several times to get out. Also I usually don't carry gear oil, Motor oil would work in a pinch. 1 drive flange for front axle, and a pair of old replaced radiator hoses.
I usually carry what I call my "get home bag" Basically it's a back pack should I have to walk/out or unplanned overnight. Gets transferred from vehicle to vehicle for every trip. Long commutes, day/weekend trips, jeep trips, ect. It has provisions for extra wet/cold weather clothing, water proof matches, couple days dry pack food/snacks, bottled water, small flash lite, Small tarp, TP, Basic first aid supplies, extra pair glasses or contact lenses if you need them. And my 9mm with an extra clip. If traveling solo is necessary always leave a planned itinerary with a trusted friend. We seldom travel solo with just one jeep though. But never ever solo sled riding.

The amount of tool/parts I carry is very much dependent upon what I’m doing. An afternoon trail ride near home is Way different than a few weeks in Colorado or a trip through the Rubicon.

I was saved by CJFino a couple years ago by his complete distributor (w/Pertronix) that he carries as a spare.

I just installed a 30” ATV tool box in the back of my Jeep. Moving heavy tools and parts from under the driver seat.

a spool of rebar tie wire and a pair of lineman's pliers can fix an amazing number of things, at least temporarily.

Nice tool box. I have a couple of WW2 era foot lockers. I put a good coat of paint on one of them and it fits perfectly in the cargo bed of a Jeep. I have my stuff in that foot locker which can be moved into whichever Jeep I am driving, and cinched down with straps. I don't have back seats in any of my Jeeps, the cargo bed is used for the foot locker, a Jerry can and whatever else I want to carry.

I don't like anything that is not secured in the Jeep that might end up falling on someone in a roll over.

So much I can't list it all.
Heavier driveline parts I off load in camp.
Short of catastrophic, I try to carry what I might need to get back to camp base, rolling on all 4s.
I figure camp is going to be closer than my garage.
