    But here we are at 180-plus posts, finding some kind of debris in the float valve.

    Some good always comes from this sort of thing.

    The OP has learned some things about diagnosis, and has become a qualified fuel system mechanic, after having gone through the entire system until he finally got to the cause. Should also have some spare fuel pumps on hand.
