OD paint syndrome. I'm not aware that the M38 transfer was anything but a standard D18. I recently bought a whole M38 for less than that price.

    1959...? Korean War...?

M38 production ended in 1952. The Korean War 'ended' in 1953.

Shaft size might be different, but basically a standard transfer case. Oh, if I remember correctly there is a 1/2 hole for a vent which connects to vacuum system. Funny what an old crate, OD paint and stencils can do to a price...pretty cool though!

Seals might be pretty dry by now.

Hmmmm. Dah.......slide the....x2......schniggle...schlog.....carry the 1....and theeeeennnnn....yea, divide by 5...and....YEP. There it is. That means a regular non military black or unpainted dana 18 should be worth exactly one thousand nine hundred and eighty four dollars and twenteeeeeeeee......three cents.

My 52 M38 not M38A1 which was built in 59 cost me $3200. Not even the purest military collector will pay even close to what they are asking.

The military versions had a few minor variations but just slightly modified civilian versions. The pan had an extra support around the rail, shifter pin was a threaded unit instead of retained by a set screw (front output housing was different because of this) but really not all that unique. I could easily build and stencil a transfer case like that.
