Tailgate?

Are OE tailgates available in decent condition and at a reasonable price? My ‘72 has had a solid (well, rusty, floppy and poorly constructed) panel bolted, welded, and bondo-ed in its place.

Reproductions are out there but…

Used ones come up time to time, but been a while since I saw a new OEM tailgate. I think the tailgate from an earlier Jeep will fit your 72.

The reproductions are okay, but every one I ever mounted had hinge pins too thick to go into the hinges and I had to grind them down, a real PITA.

I saw one at the last swap meet I went to, NOS but was surface rusty for $200. I would have purchased it but I didn’t need one and he would not wiggle on the price.
Good used ones are out there but can be hit and miss. Pay attention to rust in the bottom seam. That’s normally where the rust starts. NOS are not common at all.
