I am looking for a low cost way to stay dry in my 75 CJ5. I am finding myself wanting to dive it more and more and would love to start driving it to work, but with out a top and doors a rain shower can get my work clothes a bit wet. I was thinking about getting a bikini top and a set of soft doors. Has anyone run this set up and actually stayed dry, or will I just have to drop the money on a complete soft top? Looks are not a real concern, so that really doesn’t play much into my decision on this one; the big concern is price right now so the cheaper the better.

Bikini and soft doors will help alot. You mad get some puddling on the bikini that will run in between the door and the top, soaking your left leg. You might consider some type of "bow" under the bikini to prevent that.
The other PITA is the backspray. As you drive down the road or highway at 40 mph, the spray from your tires will kick up and a fine mist will come at you from behind (classic station wagon rear-window-exhaust type of thing). In a short time it will soak the back of your head... you'll be wiping the inside of your windshield every few minutes.
Some creative use of heavy clear plastic sheeting, properly secured, may defeat this problem...
Too bad no one makes the top/tonneau cover for CJ5s like they do the TJ. Of course, you could have one custom made at a marine canvas shop $$$$$

Good luck, let us know what you come up with...

Thanks for the input on the top and doors. I hadn’t thought about backspray that could cause a big problem keeping not only dry but clean. Has anyone tried putting one of the “windjammers” (basically a big window that goes behind the front seats) made for a wrangler in an intermediate? Also anyone know a place to find some soft doors for a good price? The besttop ones are a bit expensive for what I am looking for here.

funny you mention this, I was looking at them a while back and wondering what the difference would be between a CJ7 and an early CJ5 where a windjammer fits. seems like it would work on either.

I'd be interested to find this out as well... Could be a good alternative to a full top.

Ditto what Lynn said on the spray. I drove the CJ home from Tellico in the rain. I have no back window right now, and even with the top on, the upper and lower doors, I still got a TON of water on the inside of the w/s (and the back of my head!).

I used to have a small rubber squegee (spelling?) next to the seat to wipe off the driver's side. I kind of like the soft half tops they sell for the TJ, but I doubt we'll ever see them for the early jeeps.

I'd suggest you combine your bikini top and doors with some good rain gear. The top and doors will stop enough rain so that you're comfortable, and the rain gear will keep your clothes dry. You can get lightweight pants with zips up the side so you can put them on over your shoes and trousers, and add a lightweight rain jacket. Don't wear a hood - it'll block your vision too much. Maybe carry a bath towel in a plastic bag to dry the seats and your hair. A backpacking supply, like REI, is a good source for rain gear.

But why? Go to Beachwood, get the real deal. Canvas and all.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I have a friend with one of those windjammers for his Wrangler and next time I see him, with his Jeep, I will test and see if it will fit in my 75. Also if anyone has a set of soft doors they are wanting to part with please let me know. I will keep everyone posted on my quest to stay dry.

I actually put a BeStop Windjammer for a 80-95 Cj/YJ on my 5 last week. Its a good snug fit on the roll cage and the only thing that does not work is the the floor rails. I am still trying to deside the best way to secure the bottom flaps. Modifications to the cage prevent me from mountingthem in the normal location. I will take some pics this evening if anyone is interested. I am looking for a set of soft doors to test and see if they will seal well enough to be usefull in inclement weather when used with my bikini top.

    This is what I ordered.

I am bringing this back like it's 2005.

I got the hardtop off, I am running a bikini top and no doors. I'd like to be able to drive this thing when it rains and not get completely soaked as well. In this thread people mentioned having soft doors. Are we talking full soft doors with upper and lowers? Or baja half doors?

I drive my CJ-5 with the bikini top on, soft doors and a windjammer and I stay dry! Works GREAT! As far as anchoring the bottom of the windjammer, make sure you get one that does NOT use the "rail system". Instead find one that uses the ties at the bottom of the windjammer (kind of like the bikini top uses to secure it's self in the back of your jeep) and just bolt on a couple of "loops" (like the windshield bumbers on ur hood) and tie it off like so. That's what I do and it works...I make sure I have my "loops" mounted behind my seats discretely and out of the way.

    Hope my 2 cents helped!:)

Boodie: Do you know who manufactured your windjammer (I see that Bestop makes one for the Suzuki Samurai with footman loops at the bottom)?

Are you using full one piece soft doors?

Thanks for the reply, it sounds like your setup is what I am aiming for as well!

    Hey CEEJAY5,

I am not sure but I will be over working on my Jeep tomorrow morning. I will post back on here tomorrow for you! Sorry it can't be sooner! I do know that is DEFINATELY for a Jeep. I will get the manufacturer and part # so we can look up and see exactly what it was for! I believe it was for a YJ.

I have 2 piece soft doors (BestTop).

    Talk to you SOON,

    ~Greg

Boodie: Great, I really appreciate you checking for me! :)

I assume your doors are from a full Supertop configuration for the specific year of the Jeep. I'd love to see some pictures of the bikini, doors and windjammer combo if its not too much trouble.

But, having the manufacturer and part # will def. suffice for the time being...

    Hey CEEJAY5,

Mine is a Rampage black denim windbreaker part # 90015.

    See it HERE

I will send you some pics of the set up when I get my windshield frame back on!

I have the full softop set up from BestTop with the two piece doors (BestTop kit for 1955-1975 Jeep CJ5's). I just use my doors, bikini top, and windbreaker and I stay dry!

My friend gave me his windbreaker, tonneau cover, & summer brief (bikini top) and all I can use is the windbreaker as I have a custom roll bar and the rest won't fit! Maybe I should sell the tonneau cover and summer brief? :)

Anyways, I hope all of this helps you. Let me know!

    ~Greg aka BOODIE R)

Boodie it sure would be nice if you could post some pics here when you get it set back up. I know there are several members contemplating this and I for one would like to see the setup.
