I installed the new AA Chain clutch linkage earlier in the week. Through several mis-calculations, I needed up only being able to get about 6 full turns of the threaded cable into the junction block on the chain. This means I have 6 threads of a fine-thread 5/16" bolt to withstand the force of actuating the pressure plate.

One one hand, this scares me, b/c I don't want the threads to strip out and leave me without a clutch. On the other hand, I tell myself it should be fine, as I have a good 3/8" of threads into the junction block.

When I get back from Tellico, I'm going to order another of the cable ends and re-do it. Should I be paranoid about this?

Didn't Mike (Mcruff) have some formula to calculate the strenghth of threads a long while back? You might want to jingle his fone or shoot a PM to him.

And the answer to your last question is: Yes. You wouldn't be Timmy otherwise. :D

I seem to recall from somewhere that 3 threads is the absolute minimum for engagement. You should be OK with 6... especially in the short term.
    Of course, more is better...

I'm not an engineer of any sort, but I occasionally play one on some Jeep boards ;) :D
I agree, check with Mike for reliable info.

by chance, last night I was adjusting the cable linkage on my 70 when I inadvertantly backed the threaded portion all of the way out of the end socket. guess how many threads had been inside the socket for all of these years.....6 ;)

that works out equal to or slightly more than the diameter of the rod which should be enough strength. $.02

I believe that the amount of engagement for full strength of the threads is equal to the diameter of the bolt. Could be wrong though...

... and I recall where my 3-thread idea came from. It's an old inspection method from back in the old days. Had to check at least 3 full threads for the item to be acceptable.

    Lynn, Randy, Joe - thanks!!!

[shaking Magic 8-Ball] "All signs point to yes"!!!! :D

I'm going to throw in my old cable and associated small parts, just in case...

Well as long as you have the magic 8 ball and a spare cable, you're good to go...

BTW: If you ever install an AA chain linkage, and you wind up with a **little** too much slack in the chain, and decide to trim a little off the threaded rod... TRIM IT A TINY BIT AT A TIME!!!! (as opposed to lopping off 1/2" right off the bat  )

Not that I have experience or anything... ;)

Tim maximum engagement strength of any bolt is 1 1/2 times its diameter, anything beyond that is just more threads to dig out when it breaks:D 6 threads (about 1/4" of thread engagement) is probably about 1/2 its rated strength of about 6500psi. I would think thats fine.
