I've been looking for a cheap and local offset dana 44 rear with 5.38 gears and I think I found one.

It is out of a 1952 m38a1. Is this the same dana 44 rear used up until 1969 in the cj5/6? is anyone aware of any differences at all between this axle and those used through '69 in the cj's?

And i believe the only ratio this jeep would come with was the 5.38's. can anyone verify that? i can always check the ratio once i look at it, but the seller doesn't have a clue.

    thanks.

Could be a 10-spline D44 instead of the later 19-spline tapered axle.

if its a 52 its a 10 spline with pressed hubs , and it would have came with 5.38 if it was a m38

thanks for the help guys. is there any reason i can't use the 19 spline carrier and axle shafts from my 4.27 ratio equipped 44 rear from my '64 cj5 in the '52 m38a1 dana 44 housing?

No reason at all. They'll fit right in with proper set up. Might be easier to change the just the spider and side gears instead of the whole case. Then you don't have to reset backlash. Nickmil.
