you're fine, at some point all of us had some mistaken thoughts about jeeps - my father, who had the jeep for around 27 years, thought it had a 27 front axle when it was really a 25.

No shame to have a clueless previous owner. Glad you figured it out.

Now that we are on this might as well visit how you can really tell a 41 to a 44?

The Dana 41 has a round diff cover vs. the 6 flat sides a 44 has.

Thew 41 and 44 generally share the same parts with the exception of the ring/pinon and the differential case. The ring and pinon are larger on a 41 and the ring gear mounting surface of the case is different. I don't remember if the pinion and carrier bearings are the same or not, but the axles shafts and all the outer stuff is interchangeable (if your axle spline count matches). The spider gears for an open diff are also interchangeable.

All 41s will have have 10-spline axles where a 44 can also have 19 spline axles. You can swap in 19-spline spider gears into a 41 to upgrade to 19-spline axles.

The 41 is a perfectly fine axle, but you can't get new gears or new limited slips for them. Since tapered 44s are cheap, you're usually better off swapping for a 44 if you're going to be doing any work on it.

Hmm, after some more research, I should update a little. It appears that the pinion/carrier bearings are the same for a 44/41.

Kaiser Willys lists a Lock-Right Locker for the 41, so there is at least one limited slip currently available.

The Lock-Rite is a locking differential, not a limited slip. They are different and act differently. The 10 spline 44 and 41 Lock-Rite will interchange.

you can install 19 spline axle shafts and side/pinion gears from a 44 into a 41 but the thrust block from the 19 spline 44 must also be installed. Been there done that a couple times

Good point. I probably should have said "traction device".
