I put the new starter in today. I accidentally got the large hot cable against the heat shield that is bolted on the engine, i didnt realize this and i went to crnak it up.It cranked for a split second then i heard the arcing, i turned the ignition off went to the engine compartment and saw smoke. At first i didnt know it was the cable, so i actually went back to the cab and tried to start it again. This time nothing, i turned the lights on and there were no lights. I took a test light and touched the positive and negative battery terminals and diddnt get a light. I then looked again and saw the large cable grounding against the heat shield. I removed it, checked it and reinstalled it. I put the test light on the battery and got a light. Then went back into the cab and started the jeep again, this time it did. But now to the problem, during the day i was starting the jeep a few times to see about that noise i heard from the clutch. The engine is turning over slower now. Finally the last time i started the jeep tonight, it cranked, then paused, then finally cranked the engine over and started. Not sure if i damaged the starter or battery, or if i just drained the battery. Did the large cable grounding out damage anything?? Funny thing is i didnt blow any fueses when the first incident happened.

    Thanks!!

I don't think you have a fusible link / circuit breaker in the hot lead to the starter just a plain big cable. The battery took a hit but it should be ok and the starter should also be ok, it was a short before the starter. It sounds like the battery is run down. Charge it up and see what happens. if the problem is still there maybe the cable is bad, and if the battery wont take a charge, well it's a bad battery.

do you have an alternator, better check again, that kind of jolt may have torched it

    Dan,

Have you ever contacted one of those reality TV shows to see if they would mount a camera in your garage?? Might be a real hit.

I would suspect you only drained the battery. If it didn't melt the coating off the cable it wasn't shorted for long. Alternator could have taken a hit but if it is still charging no problem.
