    Hey all
My t14 transmission (1974 cj5 amc 304 Dana 20 tfer) is making a slight noise in 3rd gear only.

it happens at all speeds but goes away if I put the tfer case in neutral. It sounds like something’s loose, rattling around, but hard to describe, and doesn’t happen in any other gear.

I’ve recently replaced the input/output bearings and rebuilt the tfer case.

is there any chance this could be a transfer case problem?

thanx as always for your help.

If it does it under “float” conditions, I.e. when not under load either under power or compression slowing check your rear u-joint condition and u-joint angles. Driveline vibrations will travel forward through the transfer case and sound like marbles In The transmission. This typically happens under the float condition I described above though.

    Thanx!
I guess that raises another issue for me as my rear driveline angles are a bit wonky.
The total angle isn’t bad, I think I’m at about 10 degrees, but not sure output and diff pinion are parallell. In addition, output is offset from diff pinion about 1”.
I’m happy to try a cv joint, but I’ve heard that doesn’t work with any offset as the pinion expects 0 degree angle. Is that true?
